Ever have the unlucky rifle. My wife bought me a 1895 winchester about three years ago, I wanted it mostly as a wall hanger, didn't mean to hunt with it much. Well the darn thing shot so good, the action is smooth as butter, and I really liked the darn thing. Trouble was I couldn't kill anything with it. Shot at one hog the first yr I got it, pretty darn sure I hit it but never found it. Missed a doe deer at 100 yds or so right at dusk, and crippled another.

Figured out that I couldn't see the tiny gold bead at twilight so debated what to do about the sights. Thought about scoping the thing, with a scout setup, but ended up puting a thick fiber optic frontsight and a williams receiver.

I was pretty satisfied with that arrangement and hunted hard with it last year, and never saw any shootable game with it except one doe deer that saw me first, and got no shot. Still I killed 5 deer and 6 hogs with rifles during the deer season, but nothing with the jinx rifle.

That is until this afternoon, maybe the jinx is off.

Thanks guys for the kind remarks, hopefully me and the 1895 will do some good stuff this year. It happens to be in 30/06 by the way. I really wanted one in .30/40 but I load it down some and pretend it is a .30/40, I don't think the 165gr. slug I'm using knows the difference.

What calibre?

Also is your rifle drilled and tapped for a Peep sight?

If so check out Turnbull. He makes a base for Winchesters so you can mount a Burrus Fast Fire.

I am pretty sure it will fit an 1895 that is drilled and tapped from the factory, not 100% sure, but I think it will.

Also of course you can always have your rifle drilled and tapped to fit the base.

Wow, nice hog, Larry!! Congratulations! He looks heavy! I would say the jinx is definitely off! beer

Stick a red dot-type sight on it -- perfect for low-light.

The rifle is a .30/06, I bought it with the peep sight on it, but I think it came tapped for the receiver sight. I have a Ultradot Lt on another rifle and I do like that sight, but I think I will stick with what I have for now.

Thanks,
Larry

Thanks Marco and Bugle, for you kind remarks. I think the Jinx is off, and I think I'll stand pat right now with the sights.

A reciever sight with a fiber optic front acts quite a bit like a red dot sight actually. The fiber optic sights can be fragile, which is why I have a sight cover on mine.

Regards,
Larry
