some of you know and some of you dont that I give away many hours of hunting in a year mostly for pigs and exotics. I met up with a ph I knew from zim at the dallas safari club show recently and found out that on his first trip to the u.s. and Texas he had no where to stay between the dallas and reno shows so I brought him home with me. aside from hitting the stores to stock up on what he cant get at home and visiting some local battle grounds and monuments "you know tourist sh!t" I decided to take this real profesional hunter on a fully guided pig hunt in the west texas brush country. He was all to eager to bag his first north american game. We left early on a friday and had to be back to houston to catch a plane to reno on monday so time was of the essence for this hunt. WE left the chambers county swamp lands in the dark on friday morning and drove about 6 hours down 10 and 90 before we got close to the ranch at wich point mr PH says we are still in the u.s.a. right me: yup him: what state are we in now me: we are still in Texas. We had many great talks about all sorts of things and mostly about hunting. I found it charming that this guy who hunts in africa for a living was all fired up to hunt pigs in Texas. I told him how we hunted from blinds like he hunts for leopard and that we usualy put a little corn in the openings to get the pigs to stop for the shot meaning we hunt over bait. after all the toung lashings I have taken about this type of hunting here I thought he might not like it but he seemd ok about it. We talked about how much this part of texas looked like africa to both of us but that we did not get to burn the bush every year like they do in zimbabwe. I offered to let him try and spot and stalk but after he met the first prickly pear and got a look at the land he declined and told me he knew we hunted the way we did for a reason. we got to my camp in time to make an afternoon hunt and he hammered this nice little boar wit a borrowed 376 steyr of mine. he was about 150 yards down a sendaro and stepped out just enough to be seen right at sunset I said shoot and bang flop d.o.a. pig. we had a fire, cooked steakes and watched the stars in the bitter cold for a while that night then turned in. bright and early the next morning we a were at it again no pigs but had a good look at some whitetail and other local stuff not encountered back in africa while dying a slow hypothermic death at 23 deg f as the sun rose sat morning. we then took a look around some of my favorite places on the ranch saw the sites so to speak. we rested up and warmed up then headed back to a simi warm box for the afternoon we got into a group of about 10 just after sunset in the almost full moon and he hammered two running down the road 1st one at about 200 second at about 250 all in about 4 seconds darn good shooting. when cleaning them that night the water was freezing as I washed off my knife as soon as it touched the ground about 20 deg and falling then all the water froze solid in the hoses no moe runing water at all.so an african born ph asked me to take pitty on someone not use to the cold and was I glad he asked we left early the next morning and headed home 3 pigs in 1 and a half hunting days we were both delighted. on the way back we had many conversations about how we hunted method and what game we had available and he gave it a positive review over all but did mention we need some ele. and big cats before it would be perfect here. otherwise he loved it. Thanks for the re-cap! In January 2007, the DRSS had Eduard Katzke, "Katte" here on AR, with us for the DR hunt. He's a PH and outfitter from South Africa. He froze his balls off when the snow and ice storm blew through the hunting area in Brady, Texas. 577NitroExpress Double Rifle Shooters Society Francotte .470 Nitro Express If stupidity hurt, a lot of people would be walking around screaming... | |||

That does make for an interesting experience. Several years ago I got to take out Russ Broom for a pig in CA. We both had a good time. Russ seemed to enjoy the long range varmint shooting more than pig hunting as it was so different than anything he'd ever done. When we first set up the rifle and the rest and pointed out the little ground squirrels at 300 and 400 yards he was SURE we were messing with him. After he hit a few he thought it was pretty neat.
