Hello,

I've gone on several hunts over the past few years with family and guides, but I'm heading out on my first solo hog hunt here in a couple weeks. Naturally I'm excited, but before I head out into the wild, anyone have any last minute pointers to help better my chances of finding a hog?

Thanks in advance,

It's private land here in Central CA, I'm quite excited I got permission as well! I'll give you the details about the terrain tomorrow or Thurs. I'm going to go scout the place in the next day or two to get an idea of where I'm hunting.

Private land in Central California is the golden ticket, congrats. Be sure to get to where they are before first light and hunt the waterholes. I’m in the Sacramento area and it’s been +90 degrees here for a while. They should be staying close to the water. Good luck.

Okay, went and checked out the property. It's the basic Central California type terrain; rolling hills and plains with some patches of shrubs and bushes. There's a man made pond on the place that's dried up. I've got permission to turn on the water though, so hopefully that will entice some hogs to come in and drink. Whatever happens, it will just be fun to get out and go hunting.

Al, if you can fill the pond that would help, but give the pigs some time to get used to it. Once they do, you will find that they are creatures of habit. I assume that you will be hunting with a scoped rifle? Keep us posted and take lots of pictures!

I'll let you guys know if I get anything. I'm going to go put a tarp into the bottom of the pond in the next few days to keep the water from seeping into the ground. I'll fill it up then and hopefully that will give enough time for the word to spread through the forest and attract some pigs before I head out a week later.

Whitworth, forgot to mention. I'll be using my 30-06 with a Burris 3x9 on top. If I start having some success on this property, later in the year I may bring my 9.3x64mm out for a test drive. BOOM
