First hog, or why I need more range time

So a couple of weeks ago I posted about my first hog hunt. We waited 3-4 hours and then when they came into the feeder area by the blinds we lit them up too early and they bolted....still had a great time though! tu2

So fast forward to this past weekend, myself and a buddy are going to his lease (same place0 and camp the weekend and see if we could do any better.

So 2 nights and still no luck, the feeder and camera malfunctioned and I think the Hogs stopped coming to it, we heard them close for 2 nights but could not see them.

So we woke Sunday morning a little late and made a proper English breakfast and enjoyed the first frost that came in the night before.

Then this fellow (pics below) sauntered our of where we had just seen 2 bucks (nice 6pt and a spike) stroll into.

He was heading my right to left at what we figured was 140m (lased the woods behind).

Well before you could say pass hot sauce I grabbed my rifle out of the truck and took my first shot.

Now it's been about 24 years since I have actively hunted and it showed, I either did not lead him well or flubbed the shot Roll Eyes...anyway I hit him about 2" left of his hind quarters and the bullet passed right through.

Well he spun a couple times and made a beeline for the words to his right. Next shot entered his left rear quarter and passed beneath his rib cage and exit below his chin.

At that point he flipped and start running back to where he came from. 3rd Roll Eyes shot caught him at his shoulders and shattered both of them.

Anyway. like i said...more offhand practice is needed

Sorry for the poor pics the angle does not really show his size, he was a foot longer than my CZ and I figure at least 150 maybe a bit more.

I used my CZ550 FS in 9.3x62 with Privi SP and a Nikon Monarch 3 2x8.

Maybe I was expecting too much from the bullet but I expected some expansion and from what I saw there was none that I saw.

Overall I would rate it as a great time, good buddies, good food, great weather (for NE TX)

and actually brought home meat

Great job. Sounds to me like you hit him three times moving. Probably not as rusty as you think.

Did you skin him? You may have got more expansion than you think. I've seen dime size holes in the offside hide thinking the bullet zipped through. Autopsy showed the bullet worked perfectly. This was 115 ballistic tip out of a 257 Roberts.

Looks like with everything that was going on, you did a great job. Sorry, I am from the school of number of shots fired does not matter as long as the critter ends up dead an d recovered. Congratulations on your oinker.

You mean necropsy. Autopsies are death examinations performed on humans by other humans. Necropsies are death examinations performed by humans on other species.

Thanks for the kind words, not phishing just should have got him on the first one.

Regarding the bullet performance, I did not skin him all the way, I did find the 44 slug (blazer 240 JHP) I used for the coup de grace (from ~2m) and that showed no real expansion either. So I guess both are good range ammo but will stick to premium rounds for hunting, at least until I can get my reloading bench set up.

Thanks again...I forgot how much fun hunting with good people is.....

Next up is getting my 12yo and 14 yo out there

Not really, while the two are commonly used in the manner you mention, apparently mostly for political correctness, in fact, they are synonymous. Definition from OED for necropsy: necropsy
Pronunciation: /ˈnɛkrɒpsi, nɛˈkrɒpsi/
noun (plural necropsies)
another term for autopsy.

A sentence from the Oxford Eng. Dict. or as it is commonly known, the OED: "the animal must be autopsied as soon as possible".
