Well, after the family stepped outside to see the weird weather phenomenon of a large cloud mass being constantly illuminated by lightning that never hit the ground, I took one last look towards a feeder and noticed a few small blobs that weren't there before. It was 9:35 -- more than an hour beyond legal sunset -- and while I could see the piglets well enough to know what they were through the Zeiss Victory HT 3-12x56 scope, determining position would have been all but impossible had it not been for the help of the distant lightning.

I placed the dot of the #60 reticle on one that appeared to be broadside, and when the field lit up for a fraction of a second, I knew the illuminated dot was indeed on the shoulder, so I quickly touched off a round. The 6.5x30-30 AI barked, and the sound of impact from the 123 grain Hornady SST was loud enough to be heard by the family now back in the house. The bullet took the 155 yard piglet midway up the body from the shoulder and left a quarter-sized exit...and remarkably wasted precious little of the tender table-fare this one will provide. If you look midway up the body from the elbow, the small streak of blood is the entrance.

CHC-

We'll be using your method of battering/frying as this one should be quite tender.

The electrical display yesterday was really odd. There was no rain, no thunder -- just the constant stroboscopic illumination within a huge cloud. I looked it up. It's called intra-cloud lightning.

We've had it before...melt-in-your-mouth goodness!!! Cream gravy and garlic bread are necessities to round out the main course. Big Grin

I haven't always taken pictures of the pint-sized porkers as they are sometimes taken as doubles and have some graphic bullet entrances/exits. And while I don't care for the shot in general, there are times when conditions are perfect that I'll take a head shot on the piglets to preserve meat. And when they lose their minds, those, too, are often more graphic than I want in a photo. But here are a few that I remember:

The third schwein from the bottom has quite a bit of Eurasian wild boar in him.

Our local schwein freischling are about that size right. I have seen a couple lately.

During this last pig hunt, two-thirds or maybe more of the piglets in the sounders were striped.

Not only do we have the normal red with yellowish/whitish stripes in this area, we also have piglets that are greyish brown with the lighter colored stripes.

These watermelons are from over here. Healthy little kids, ready to grow up and terrorize the corn fields.

A lot better luck than I had day before yesterday. Seems I now have hogs now in my woodland, a rather large black and a smaller red one, maybe others. I've been baiting them with soured corn. Thought I'd made a short evening hunt and be home for dark. 6:30 a large black shape started coming thru the weeds and I got excited. Came out and sat down next to the corn, then laid down and started dragging corn with a front foot. Yep, a dadgum bear! Protected of course, so I just popped a couple caps to interrupt his free meal and went to the house. There's other days. GW

The possibilities for disaster boggle the mind.

One of the biggest black bears I shot came in knocked over the bait stump. laid down and started pulling bait to his mouth.

A 350 speer mag tip threw the shoulders at 2450 from my 416 Taylor. Did the job he just laid there at the shot.

A second one make sure he wasn't going any where.

He weight just over 500lbs

It is common bear behavior to sit or lay down at the bait.
