Andr: all our hogs are mixed breeds or "chanchos jabales". Mr. Pedro Luro introduced the sus scrofa (pure breed or the so called Russian boar in the U.S.A.) in the early years of the XX Century, for hunting at his private game preserve in La Pampa Province. Other ranchers did likewise in the Southern part of Argentina. Nowadays the pure breeds are no more, some boars show original lines, others do not. Moreover many feral hogs from domestic origins roam several places, most notably coastal areas of Buenos Aires and Ro Negro Provinces where they interbreed with the Russians. Lacking natural enemies, the hogs invaded other locations and are a true menace for crops and cattle in some areas. Regards

Gentlemen I just read the article El Chancho Jabali in the Safari magazine (SCI)about boar hunting in Argentina. El Chancho Jabali is a mix of feral hog and Russian boar. Have any of you hunted this Boar ? Cheers, Andr

As usual, my country neighbour is right I will add also that the name chancho-jabal comes also because the people of the farm call the domestic pigs: "chanchos", so it was normal that when these beasts appeared they start calling them, chancho-jabal. Keep in mind that the jabal is the wild boar. Most of the wild boars down here (South America) have some domestic blood but they look 100% as a pure european wild boar. The genotype is not 100% but the fenotype yes. LG

The same holds true for the pig in California. Originally, they were escapees from everyone from the original explorers to the first American settlers. At the turn of the XX Century, pure-blood European ("Russian") stock was released in Monterrey County. They have since spread their genepool all up and down the coast and around to the Western slope of the Sierra Nevada. Most all of our hogs share both bloodlines.
