Went make a little morning hunt with my hunting buddy Neil a few miles from his house. It seems a farmer friend of his was having hog trouble in his pastures and had requested that we visit the area with our dogs.

After a few missteps we got two bays going. Dogo my catch dog, took off in the direction of one, while we waited so see what would develope. For undetermined reasons the bay Dogo went on died down suddlenly and we went after the second bay. I told Neil that we would probably be catch dogless as Dogo was in pursuit of the bay that fizzled. He said no problem as he patted his .22 mag. revolver.

Well low and behold when we got to the bay, there was Dogo latched onto a young sow, with three or four of Neil's dogs. The bay was on the other side of a little creek of course, and somebody had to get wet to settle things there. I Volunterred, crossed the little creek, and poked her behind the shoulder. I then noticed a log crossing the creek just downstream of the bay Roll Eyes There was no real need to get wet after all.

She was a nice little sow, just what we was wanting. So, we decided to do it again. We loaded up the dogs and went a short distance down a trail. I told Neil that I spotted some fresh routing so we let all the dogs out but Dogo.

The dogs took off in pursuit, and it didn't take long before we decided this was for real. We let Dogo out and we all went in pursuit. When we got to the bay, we saw that Dogo and company had a huge boar. Dogo had an ear and there were dogs scattered about the hog, here and there. Things looked good at that point, but it didn't stay that way. By the time we approached the hog and dogs had fallen into a deep little creek. The Dogs were really struggling now as they had no footing, and were swimming, trying to hold on.

One by one they loss their hold of the hog until it was just Dogo hanging on to the hog's ear. I could see blood pouring from Dogo's chin as he had sustained a nasty wound there. He needed help and soon, I jumped into the water with the idea to wade over and stick the hog with my knife, but after two steps I was navel deep. It came to my mind that I would notbe able to move much in that deep water and would not be able to get out of the hog's way if I needed to. It was getting a bit desperate. I would have called Dogo off if I could, but I knew that would never happen, he and the hog were in a fight and only one was going to walk away from it. Frankly under these conditions things were very much in the hog's favor.

I put up the knife and drew my revolver, none of the other dogs were in the way, but Dogo continued to hang on to the boar. I felt I needed to do something quickly, so I decided to chance a shot, the only shot available was at the hogs head, so I had to place the shot between the hogs eyes just inches from Dogo's head. At the shot which was about 12' away, the hog slumped forward, into the deepest part of the creek and for a while Dogo's head disapeared from view, as he held on to the hog's ear. I almost panicked thinking I had killed them both. But he finally let go, I guess he needed air.

We got the hog to the bank and he was a huge beast. Dogo and all the dogs had suffered wounds, but none too serious. But it was fast and furious for a while, quite the battle.

Thanks to you all for you're remarks. Dogo is fine and itching to get back at it. I catch some heck from the Mrs. when he come back from a hunt looking like hell. He is more than a hunting dog. As we live in a rural area, he is our chief of security, he keeps the varmits out of the garden, and he is the most loyal friend we have. She doesn't like to see him get bloodied. Truthfully I wouldn't hunt him anymore, but he takes it so hard when he is left behind, he really loves it so.

Ghubert my friend, it is said that necessity is an excellant teacher, because that is true we are somewhat handy with the tools of the hunt.

Marko, you can join us if you like. Bring your Kabar and one of those cannons you do so well with.

Regards to all,
Larry

Nope, not a Cold Steel, but an Entrek. Not sure which model, Buffalo or Bison or something of the sort. It has a 9" blade that is double-edged. That should help you with the model.

Son-in-law called me to go hunting while I was in the garden, missed the call. Frowner He just sent me this picture.

Looks like a pretty nice hog. Pics taken with phone not so good.

Catch dogs some pretty good pitts couldn't stop this one. They tried and got tore up pretty good for their effort. Stuart's model 94 sealed the deal. Also learned one of our friends that we hunt with, was suppose to hunt with today, lost his catch dog, caught a tusk over the eye. He held on until the hog was tied up and then fell over dead. Too bad, I knew this dog and he was good.

Juan, I'm feeling pretty good about my little piece of Argentina right now. Came pretty close to losing him though, that wound he got was pretty close to the carotid artery, if it had been just a bit deeper...

Sharps I passed on your comments to Dogo and he expressed his thanks.

here's a better pic.
