I have recently been researching available bullets to handload in my Savage model 99 in .358win. for use on wild pigs. The most common bullet weights are 225 and 250 gr. and I am seriously considering the 225 gr Barnes Triple shock and 225 or 250 gr. Swift A-Frame. Out of my 22" barrel I can achieve approx 2450fps at the muzzle with the 225gr bullets. And 2330fps with the 250 grain. Both bullet weights will produce about 2000 foot pounds at 200 yards, but the Barnes has a much higher B.C. My main concern is that I will not be able to properly expand these controlled expansion bullets at extended range. Has anyone used either of these bullets at these velocities?

Howdy and welcome Here's the drill on the "short range" 358 (i have 3 of them, on different platforms) 1: a 358 can launch a 225 sierra gm (bc .411) at 2500 FPS 2: a 308 can do the same with a 168/9 match bullet, bc about .420... and the 308 is still considered accurate at 800 yards with that load... and delivers ONE HALF the energy of the 358 3: barnes bullets are a MILE long, and will give you trouble... 4: you WILL NOT be shooting hogs at 200 yards... in the 90% of the time situation, outside of sitting in a stand, your hog hunting (on foot stalking) will be 150 (max long) to 20 (can be less) with an average range of 50-80 yards... let's face it, a pig is low to the ground and moves FAST long shots at them are probably a shade on the difficult level If there where a GOOD 225 gr RN, i probably would go back to hunting my 358 more... jeffe

Jeffe...how about the 220 gr. Speer FP...not a real round nose but it seems to work pretty good in my .350 Mag.... If you want something that will expand and penetrate try the 225 Nosler petition. The Nosler is constructed fairly light up front unlike the Swift. They seem to expand regardless of the range... Bob

But will the A-Frame perform at .358win velocities?
