Took this brute tonight at 7:56 under virtually-dark conditions using my 24" 6.5x30-30 AI and a 123 grain SST launched at 2600 fps. As some of you may have seen, I recently sold my 25-35 barrel and a couple other things to get the scope I used tonight. It actually came in today, and I was lucky enough to have an opportunity with it. It's a 2010 Zeiss Victory Varipoint 3-12x56 w/ #60 reticle (basically a 4-a with a small illuminated dot). The shot was about 165 yards, and it took me a few minutes to figure out which end was which. The bullet took the hog on what I consider the point of the shoulder and should have been in perfect alignment with the heart, but more on that later, including bullet performance, after the folks doing the butchering are done. The photo does not do justice to the size of this boar. His shoulders were truly impressive -- both deep and thick. I had no idea how large he was until I drove up. He actually fell in his tracks, so I am anxious to see what that 123 grain SST did to provide this performance. Another view. Keep in mind the objective on the scope is 56mm and that the barrel alone is 24" -- and being in the foreground makes the rifle appear to be bigger than it is in relation to the hog behind it. The hog was not weighed, but I am usually fairly close in my estimates vs. the scales. I'd say this one was a solid 278-280. Bobby: Hog looks bigger in this picture than the one you sent me. You bet, that's about as big as any I've seen you post yet. IS IT? Like they've always claimed: "single shot shooters can really shoot". Don't recall you saying any have ever needed a finisher. You've got your range figured out that's for sure. Am mighty happy to hear you're feeling better these days. Hope it lasts a long time now. George "Gun Control is NOT about Guns' "It's about Control!!" Join the NRA today!" LM: NRA, DAV, George L. George-He doesn't quite make my top 5 but is probably pretty close. I used to keep after them pretty good and have killed 400+ over the years, but those that approach or break the 300 pound mark are extremely rare around here and likely represent around 1% of those I've killed. Below are a few of the nicer ones that I remember, but I don't have photos of them all. As to my health, the good days seem to be about as uncommon as a true 300 pound wild hog. But I'm thankful for the better days am just trying to make the best of things -- and getting to occasionally snipe a hog from the house sure helps keep my mind off things. I've been fortunate and haven't needed a finisher on a hog since I quit trying to make the 6.5/120 TSX and 7mm/120 TSX and TTSX work years ago. They were extremely accurate but just not the best match for the moderate velocity cartridges I use. I did have some good performance from them at times, but the inconsistency back then drove me crazy. With that being said, one Barnes bullet that does work as advertised and makes me smile is the little .25 cal 80 grain TTSX. I used it for a few years in a 25-35 barrel and even managed to take two sows with one shot and got complete penetration on both. Wound cavities showed it opened as advertised, much as that bullet had done on other game for me.
