Well, this is an interesting story.

Took my daughter on her first boar hunt this weekend. We went to Tejon Ranch about 2 hours north of us here in California. Really a beautiful place. This is my third time hunting the ranch and I can’t get enough of the place. The terrain is varied, with prairie type topography at the lower elevations to alpine up near the top of the ranch. All in all the whole place is probably the size of a county.

First night we set up a blind near a wallow and saw a monster boar bearing down on us. Carolyn took a shot but missed. The next morning we headed out in the prairie and as the light came up we saw a large boar moving towards cover about 200 yards out. Carolyn jumped out of the truck took aim and nailed him right in the engine room. The damn thing still traveled about 100 yards before it realized it was dead. I fired off a couple of shots thinking she might have missed and did nothing more the gut shot it ruining her perfect hit.

She was ecstatic.

Next came my hunt that night. Drove around the alpine area seeing no pigs. Finally we saw a three large pigs about a 1000 yards below us off of a hill. Hiked down and when we got into shooting position they had wandered off. Oh well….back to the truck. Now the light was getting low and we zipped off to one last potential spot….a medow where cattle on the ranch feed and our guide has often seen pigs interspersed with them. Sure enough, we came around the corner and there were three sows and four or five youngsters. These pigs were only about 100 yards away and had no clue we were there. I got out of the truck and used the door as a rest. Took my time…controlled my breath, took aim…and MISSED!!!!! I mean really really missed! The pigs scattered and I took a flailing shot a the one I had aimed at, but to no avail. The only thing I could hear as I watched my trophy wander off was the laughing of my daughter.

Well…that’s hunting. Guess we’ll be eating HER pig for the next few months!

When I figure out how to get a picture onto this thing I'll share it.

Congratulations to your daughter. I know that you are very proud. Remember, her shooting is a direct reflection of your training plus her ability, so you must have taught her well.

If you need any excuses for missing, I would be happy to supply several of my favorities. In this case I would suggest that your scope was knocked out of alignment or that your daughter moved in the truck, disturbing the steady rest you had on the target. I have many more...

Good job, Dad! I can't wait to take my kids when they get a little bigger. And don't feel bad, I missed one at 40 yards recently.

Any pictures?

Very nice going, Steve. She'll grow up wanting to go out with you every time now. You've got the makings of the next "Diana" there.

Steve,

Congrats to you and you're daughter...don't worry...I missed a pig at 15 yds once.

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

You need to upload the pictures to the internet (somewhere like a Photobucket account). You then get the URL of the picture itself and put that into the box you get when you click the image button in the reply box (second from the right on the top when you click "Reply").

You can email me a couple of pictures to post if you have any trouble with the directions, or someone can help you get them posted if you upload them to the internet.

What's with the BAM T-shirt, does she like EMERIL LAGASSE? BAM! BTW, don't show her these posts, it may go to her head. roflmao roflmao

Cool
Thanks guys. I am 100% the proud Dad. Invader...she was shooting a Remington 710 in .270. A pretty good starter gun for her. We ripped off the Bushnell scope and replaced it with a leopold. The darn thing shoots better than my model 70! (but if you read my story above you would have already realized that!)

Now don't go trying to blame the gun--haven't you heard it is the one behind the gun?

Mad

Went to the range with the gun uncleaned and in the exact same condition as it was over the weekend. Used the same hunting ammo figuring I would test the scope....obviously the scope just HAD to be off. Shot three rounds in the 10 ring at a hundred yards.....Damn...Well Dustoffer....I hate to say it, but your right.

Now you need to rely on my other suggested excuse, that someone moved the vehicle and spoiled your shot.

Should you need any other excuses, just ask.
