Just happened to finish reloading and testing my first batch of 45/70 cartridges ...

Hornady 300 gr HP with 53 grains of IMR3031 to be shot from a MArlin 1895SS ...

Accuracy is outstanding (using an IOR 4x32), but my concern started when measuring its speed ...
I have an Oehler chronograph (rather used or better say bad used !) which make me doubt about its performance ...

The fact is that for that reload, IMR states I should be achieving something around 1900fps, but my chronograph "said" it was only 1650 ...

Powder in excellent conditions, and no, I don´t have any other chronograph available Frowner!!

BTW, no signs of over pressure at this stage ...

Comments ?? I don´t want to stress too much the brasses, since in my country they are quite difficult to find nowadays ... but will like to achieve a velocity of 1900/1950 fps .... Hogs are waiting for this combo !! Wink Smiler

regards

Barrel length of the IMR test barrel? Think that you generally loose @30fps per inch loss.

Think a 26" is probably a standard - how does that compare with the Marlin?

If the accuracy is there, and bearing in mind the normal ranges you would choose to employ a lever gun at - will the extra few fps be worth getting too concerned about? Smiler

IMR3031 would not be my fourt or even fifth choice for loading the 45-70.

My first choice is Alliant RL7 which in a 22" barrel will push those 300grain bullets to 2150+

I've been wanting to give H335 a try as it's listed as the fastest propellant with the 300gr partition

But I'm thinking that 67grains of H335 behind a 300gr partition is going to make one hell of a flash from a 22" barrel.

Worked up a load using Barnes 300 gr HPs for my buddy's Marlin .45-70. Turned out to shoot lights out and kick just as badly. Once I put a Decellerator on it, it was fine. Really puts a hurt on hogs--out to about 100-125 yds.

As I remember, the load was chronographing 2200fps or so. Really got my attention

Afrikaander: I´m using the following reload in my .375, which proves very accurate at 150 meters. Winchester cases, Federal 215 primers, Speer 270 grains bullets and 82.0 grains of I.M.R. 4350, O.A.L 9.1 centimeters. This recipe, cronographed 5 feet from the muzzle of my 25.5" barrel flies at 2.700 f.p.s. exactly. Groups of three shots are 1" or less. Did you try it?.

I find IMR3031 is an accuracy powder in my 458 Win.It is no problem shooting full loads with the Speer 400 grain flat nose bullet that group under 1.5 minute if angle with a Ruger No.1 euipped with a 3 power scope.More magnification would probably tighten the groups a bit.

hello;
The first thing I discovered when I got a Chronograph was that the velocities posted in the manual were somewhat optimistic, to say the least. I was using the moderate charges, but after that, I went to the maximums.

Dearest Afrikaander and Nanital:
Did you know that we are common friends?
It would be a good idea to join and have good time hunting, drinking some whine and a barbeque. Besides we could test your wonderful reloads!
Let’s make a plan for the end of this hunting season.
Best regards

I still remember with great pleasure that wonderful time I spent at your home, Willy Smiler
Send my regards to your family and hope to see you soon !

Nainital, upto now I have shot only 300 grainers with my 375 H&H ... silvertip bullets with factory loads and GK and Hornady´s RN in my own reloaded ammo ... but I have taken notice of your reload and will surely try it soon Wink

Regards,

Sadly, no lease or land of my own. So I linger at the range....

I have found your 300 Hornady / 53.0 IMR3031 load to be quite (sub-MOA)accurate in my #1, as well. It is the favorite 45/70 load of the gent that sold me my #1.

His estimate was 2000 fps+, but that seems a bit high to me - & I have no chrono to confirm either way.

I have also found IMR 4198 to have a surprising amount of potential, considering the low load density. Many report great full power 405 loads, but I have used it mainly for a 1 MOA pussey cat plinking load: 300JHP / 36.0 IMR 4198

I have tried all manner of loads for the 2 different 45-70's I have had, now have a marlin 1895ss and used this load last fall for turkey; nice jake offhand at 50 yards, (I was so proud of myself until time to dress the bird), and a fat doe at 75 yards, (one shot deer dropped at the shot), and feral cat at 150-160 yards, (my best shot yet with the 45-70).

IMR 3031, 54.0 grains, Remmington 300 grain jacketed hollowpoint. Have not chronoed this load yet but estimate velocity at 1875fps based on other loads I have chronoed. Shot a 4 shot, (all the ammo I had left at the time) 1 1/8 inch load at 100 yards.

Hope this helps,

Good luck and good shooting,
Eterry
