I could have posted this in Handgun Hunting, but I plan on using it on hogs. I bought some Hornady 225gr FTX, but have yet to use one hunting. Any opinions on this ammo? Is there some better 44Mag factory ammo for hunting hogs? ________________________________________________ Never met a Colt I didn't like.

I like Double Tap's (www.doubletapammo.com) 320 grain WFN load. I have used it successfully on a few hogs and it knocks the crap out of them. I don't like light expanding bullets for hogs -- especially if they are big and have a thick gristle plate. "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid." +1 what Whitworth satd in principal. Any immature boar or medium sow can be dropped with a well placed 225, even a 180. But when the boar of a lifetime comes along, it may not be such a good idea. I would shoot the 320s if you can, 300s or even 265 in a pinch but my peferences would stop there. Most hog killing with a revolver is close enough that any advantage of high velocity is wasted. You want penetration first. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

For meat pigs, expanding bullets are fine. But again, the monster hog of a lifetime may come along (always when least expected), and you may be left wishing you were carrying something heavier in your revolver. I like Federal's 300 grain Cast Core load as well. "Ignorance you can correct, you can't fix stupid." JWP If stupidity hurt, a lot of people would be walking around screaming. That's what I needed to know. Thanks fellas. Now I just hope I can find some. I've always been a big Federal fan. Double Taps look inpressive too. ________________________________________________ Never met a Colt I didn't like.

My niece shot a pig with my 44 Mag Win Trapper with Winchester factory 250 Nolser Partition at about 20 yards, it was a bang flop. I shot a pig with Hornadays Leverevolution 225gr at about 40 yards with the same lever rifle. It was a bang flop. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Out of a handgun, I think 225 grains is light -- hell, I think 240 is light. In my S&Ws I use a 280 grainer, but that is strictly for the longevity of the revolvers (Smiths just don't take the abuse one can heap on the Ruger!). JMHO. On the javelina hunts this March, I ran low on the 250 grain Keith-Style semi-wadcutters I normally use and had my wife pick me up some Buffalo Bore, Jacketed Flat Nose, 270 grain shells, listed at 1450 fps and really liked their performance. I was using them in a 1894 Marlin 44 Mag Lever Acrion, but they functioned well and shot accurately. I think with a properly placed shot they would work well for you.
