Hog season is still open-- My next-door neighbor came to visit a month ago to ask if I was interested in helping a friend of his with a hog problem-- So--went to meet and greet, then walked the place - about 100 ac with a small tank nearly dry. As I walked through the mesquite, I saw a black mass under a mesquite tree about 40 yds away. Didn't have a gun - but put a sneak on 'em anyway. Got to within 20yds and saw it was 10-11 pigs--two 130-150-lb sows and a bunch of shoats. Fast forward--put up a feeder and a ladder stand down in the creek bottom as far from the house as i could get to try and keep the pigs out of the landowner's yard. Game cam pics showed about 15 or so pigs coming to the feeder after 5 days, to include two sows of 175+ lbs and a boar that looked like a boxcar. Sat the stand once with nothing, sat again with the rifle and missed from 80 yds--lights weren't pointed right. This week, went back to the ladder stand since the wind was right, and about 5:45, 3 shoats come in. I slipped the safety off the 12-ga, planning to wait until all 3 heads were aligned. Well, shotgun got heavy and the pigs weren't cooperating, so I settled for 2 out of 3. Two fat little sows, 56 and 58 lbs. Perfect grillers. Fire up the grill!!! Well done, dustoffer! And you can tell all those animal rights people that you have a passion for practicing conservation in the field -- you know, killing 2 piggies for the price of one shell. And that is the real definition of grillers. Not wrapped in bacon - they are the bacon. | |||
