Just wanted to share a pic of a nice boar caught with the dogs by a good friend of mine. He weighed 118# dressed and had tusk that went a little over 6 inches on both sides.

Happy Hog Hunting,

Dom

Wow, what a pair of tusks on that bugger.
Where's the uppers though?
Did these hooks get into the sides of the snout?
Thanks for posting, impressive.

Wow what crazy teeth for such a smallish hog. When it comes to teeth, y'all have us all beat. Good hunting Dom and may you never need to staple a good dog again.

Thanks for posting the photo, Dom. That is impressive! The hogs around here don't seem to develop tusks anywhere near that size.

The lack of uppers is why the lowers are so big. I have seen that several times.

Mahalo everyone!!!

Larry, Thx but unfortunately had to staple and suture few of the dogs this past week. One had a punctured lung and some internal injuries as well. He's eating soft food now so he's goin to be ok. Got um all on antibiotics and in the recovery room Smiler

This boar has uppers, filers, whets or whatever everyone calls them. I've seen it a lot here the tusk grow in many angles as well. Seen some really nice ones over the years, my personal best is 10 1/2 inches long. But I've seen them over a foot long.

Aloha and Happy Hog Hunting!!!

Wow, that is amazing! What is the preferred type of knife that is used? I seen some guys use a quite small knife and go into the neck/jugular and others go larger and thrust into the heart/lung.

Merry Christmas to all.

Aloha Sledge, It all depends really! Some prefer certain types while others swear by others. I prefer the Cold Steel Trailmaster or similar.

Aloha Dom,
Nice set of teeth on that bugger! Sorry to hear that you had to stitch up a couple of your dogs. Sounds like they had a good scrap going. At my advance age, I'm too chicken to get in with a knife so I now only whack 'em with a rifle or handgun.

Best Wishes for the New Year!

Seems like the Hawaiian islands produce smaller bodied hogs with bigger teeth than what I tend to kill in Texas.

I don't know if it's true or not just seems like it form the pictures I see.

Surestrike,
Your observation is correct. The pigs here are Polynesian descendants introduced around 1,100 years ago. The original Polynesian pig IS smaller and narrower framed with longer snouts, thus the longer tusks. There is not much domestic genes in the feral pigs here. On the BIG ISLAND (mainland U.S.), there is more domestic genetic influence. That could account for the larger body size, and thicker but shorter tusks.

The introduced Eurasian feral stock will definitely show an increasing influence over time and areas.
