What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

dpcdI have hunted them in the eastern part of the state, but not in the pan handle.
Oklahoma.

StonecreekProbably you can find some in the southwestern corner of the Texas Panhandle proper. Just south of the Red River there should be lots of them in the Childress, Paducah, Quannah area. Foard County (Crowell) used to represent itself as the "Wild Hog Capital of Texas".
I'm not sure how far north in the Panhandle that huntable populations exist, but I'd think they would be found in the Canadian River breaks.

georgeldNot related to hogs.
Still related to Tex Panhandle
and the lil burgs like Quanah
and such.
Be damned careful of the speed
traps!! I got nailed in Quannah
in the half block trap that dropped
10mph. Just as I got to the sign I hit the brakes and the cop on my
ass lit me up. $130.
I was within the limit til I hit that
sign. Dropped from 35 to 25mph for half a block. TFL then!
"you want to fight the ticket just come
back to the court date". Yeah sure, 600 miles?
I just figured it was 'get even time'
for all the late nights I woke 'em all
up when trucking thru there with the
jake brake rattling the windows.
Still, irritating!

crsheltonGeorgeld,
Hey, do not tell everyone about the smaall town speed traps or you might disrupt the economy.
I was raised in the Panhandle and from high school through college, we made it a point to know every town speed trap and highway patrol station in the 500 miles between Borger and Austin. Shotgun rider was lookout in unknown territory.
The only time I was stopped was at night south of Childress on a solo run from UT home for the holidays. Fortunately the HP let me off with a warning because I worked at the DPS in Austin.

crsheltonMike,
Another good one to check. I had forgotten that it is in the south east corner of the panhandle in some good game country.

georgeldHA!
Back in my trucking days n nights.
Don't ever recall having a passenger
or being one going thru that country.
Believe it's likely I've made close to
100 trips down 287 thru there. Plus a
great many thousands of miles around
Texas. I've gotten two tickets in Texas.
One in Andrews $10 for an overload the
company didn't give any choice in hauling.
And this passenger car speed trap ticket
on the way home from Fla.

georgeldHmm, had an uncle that was a
cowboy on that big ranch that
Adobe Walls was on. Said he'd
ridden up on that hill quite a
few times.
Moved to Pueblo in '35 I think it was.
You guys know of any Eiland's down that way?
His name was: Teague Ben Eiland. Died in
'73. Don't know how old he was.

Bill/OregonCharles, yes, great-grandfather's ranch was near the now-demolished site of Plemmons. He was a "judge" of Hutchinson County about 1918 or 1919 -- Champion Travis Traylor.
George, that would be the Turkey Track Ranch. It's where Billy Dixon rests -- at the site of the Second Battle of Adobe Walls.
Hallowed ground in this man's opinion.
