Man those hogs are getting under my skin...

Couple weeks back we headed up to my mom's place to get her acre or so of yard done up for her. Noticed some rooting around a couple of her fruit trees. So being the good son that I am I decided to rid her of the problem before they got worse.

She had gone to town with her sister and brother to some function and about 9'ish I slipped out the back door popped the flood light on to find a 200'ish pound hog standing under the peach tree. Back in the house I go, killing the light, grabbing the 454 and a flashlight, back out I went. Well this, that, and the other all went wrong and I missed the damn thing as it hauled out of the yard. Next morning, the grandson and me ambush them in the back pasture with him making the first shot standing and off a bi-pod, he refers to as legs. The weeds were as tall as he was so it was the only way he could get a shot. He ever so slightly missed but missed non the less. The range was just over 180yds and he is only 7 1/2 so I cut him a huge amount of slack. Problem was he hands me the rifle and with the bi-pod swinging from the bottom, I try twice to hit the rest of the bunch as they head for cover. Didn't touch a hair. The grandson took hard notice, and tells me, "pawpa, next trip up maybe we "both" need to do a little practice with the rifle and legs". It was a great time however, as to him it was like he was on one of the Africa hunts he sees on TV.

Well this past weekend we were back up again to mow some pasture and such, and got there late Saturday evening, due to helping out a friend on his place most of the day. WE walk in I fix and eat me a sammich, then head out to get my bow and our suitcase from the truck. As I head down the steps, I se movement and look over to see this round brown pig butt pointed right at me as he heads through the fence. I am beside myself thinking, not again. So I head inside with the stuff, tell the wife and mom about the damn hog, then head back out to get the 454, and my arrows. Again as I head down the steps, motion catches my attention as I look over to see standing broadside, another 200'ish pound sow smacking on a fallen pear. To ad insult ti injury this one stands there quietly smacking on the pear as I get the revolver out of the truck, get a rest on the hood, and then as I draw the hammer back, and trip the trigger on an empty cylinder, it simply leaves in about three strides.

I waited for them to come back until about 2:30 in the morning checking every 15 - 20 minutes. Got back up at 4 and they had cleaned up all of the peaches and pears from the area.

IF it weren't for the huge ass 8' across 1+ foot deep hole they rooted, that I have to fill in before being able to get the mower out next trip up, It would be a fun game. Now though they have brought down some hard feelings and I will retaliate with extreme vengeance.

Man I love shooting hogs, or at least shooting at them as has been the case lately.

Mike-

It sounds as if a healthy dose of revenge is in order -- and SOON!

We should all be so lucky to have such an opportunity. Keep us posted. At least now you can say you are hunting educated hogs. Wink

Not sure about the lucky part. They do however keep you on your toes if you go after them. I have a rifle which would get things done, but I am trying different approaches to keep things somewhat fun. That has come to an end however. Next trip up, there will be smacked hogs on the ground for sure.

They are smarter than folks give them credit for, but they have been back on a regular basis just about every day for the past two weeks. They are getting the peaches which are small hard and sour, that fall from the tree as well as immature pears which do the same. With the lack of rain they seem to drop off a dozen or so fruits each day and they hogs are coming to them like a sweet corn feeder.

Mike,

Where in Tx are you located? I may be able to help you with your piggy problem. I have a 454 single shot rifle that is pretty accurate.

Get a red light and hang it in one of the fruit trees, and turn it on when it gets dark--hogs get used to it really quick and you don't have to turn on a light to see if you have visitors. You can also use white lights, but they draw lots of bugs.

Whitworth, your absolutely right. It is fun, just annoying at the same time. I could easily shoot a load of buckshot and get the job done, but that doesn't help me hone my skills much. I really want to take them with the bow first or the revolver second. Not like i have gotten any with a revolver before, just it is a different one than I normally uses and only has a couple to it's credit. The ultimate would be to get two at once with the bow. I know the broad heads will get through, as well as the 470gr arrows going 270fps. I just need to do my part if the time comes.

Drew, our place is up near Palestine. I appreciate the offer, but I would be forced to fend off my daughter and oldest grandson who are both wanting the chance at them as well. LOL I keep telling them both that you have to be there to get them and they are only about a half hour drive away. But being the mother of three boys and working till after 5 in the evenings limits the time they can spend there as well. Heck my mom might get bent if they root up another hole in her back yard and bust one herself. LOL

Dustoffer, I ahd two 150 watt flood and a 60 watt halagen going last weekend and it didn't bother them one bit. They did however wait till after I had hit the sheets before coming back. They aren't bothered by the light, the issue is getting the light on them and being able to see the black sights against the black hog. I have not got a light for my bow sight as well as one that will shine very dimly on my revolver sights. So the next few weeks will be entertaining for one of the two of us. Which one is yet to unfold.

Mike, load that blame pistol and strap it ON. Carry it with you at all times, DO NOT leave it in the house or the truck. Be like a boy scout, BE PREPARED. lol You will have better luck that way.

Now go kill some pigs. BOOM

Mike,

Get some RBCD ammo from that little company in San Antonio. The results will blow your mind. I have chronied their ammo from my 10" Model 83 at just over specified velocity...2800fps. Safe pressure!!!

Mike--do like I do--get a comfortable chair and some shooting sticks, and set up downwind in comfortable range. Usually the hogs make enough noise so that even if you doze off, their grunting will awaken you. Last time I was out, I "dreamed" I heard a hog--peeked at the feeder and nothing was there, so closed my eyes again. Heard it again and realized I wasn't dreaming--looked about 80 yds to my right and there were 3-4 of them standing looking at the feeder. They never went into the lights, and can't see my reticle unless they do-so "they escaped to die another night."
