Shoulder Shot A No-Go
Went out last night late (about 10) since the last two boars have been riding the "midnight express." Got in the stand, got set and about 11:15 he shows up.

Took about another 15 minutes of his fiddle-farting around to give me a broadside presentation and I let it go. THWACK!! He leaves, with the lighted nock bouncing along, but about 5 yds out the nock falls to the ground. I'm thinking, "broken arrow" and collect my stuff, climb down, and walk over to the nock. Here's what I find: about 4-5" penetration and only a quarter-sized spot of blood at the arrow.

So, based on the broadside shot, the sound of impact, almost no blood, and the wrecked broadhead, I'm betting I center-punched the shoulder joint. Next time I'll try to remember to wait until he's in some better light so I can see my aiming point better, and to wait for a quartering-away shot.

Todd--yep--classic vintage BH and old aluminum shafts, but a modern Mathews DXT compound bow. I like the Razorheads due to their ease of sharpening, and the Eastons for their overall weight--and low price.

Feral hogs are my psssion too--except in whitetail season. Big Grin I'm fortunate to have two friends with land who appreciate my efforts at elimination.

After seeing pigs dead centered on the shoulder at less than 100 yards with a 7mm Mag and no exit wound, yep I can see that happening with a bow.

The shoulder shot is my fave with my .405 WCF.
Even Hornady 300 grain factory stuff shoots clear through, much less Barnes and North Fork bullets.

I had a similar experience Friday evening, took a shot at 160 yards with a 110 Barnes out of the 300blk. Hit shoulder and no exit. I could smell the boar dead in the exact area, but never went looking for it.

glocker17--if you could smell him, probably just as well you didn't find him. That kind gets a drag to the "buzzard buffet" by me.

Someone will be around shortly to tell us that they're actually not so tough -- irrespective of all of the evidence to the contrary.

Right, as hot as it was this weekend it would have been worm food most likely. I just back strap them when it warm out. Rest is coyote bait.

As I have been saying, and everyone laughing about it; you guys are all using way too small calibers on hogs. The rifles I use all allow a shoulder shot and they will punch through from any angle, and KILL the thing. These small bores pest guns, like 300 mags and such, are for varmints; not serious hog hunting.

You would've smoked him had your broadhead held together. Broadhead failure. High speed from a modern bow, plus an old broadhead...
