Just to know what you normally do...

I normally pass on shots to young deers or does, I know bucks will stay around a given area so maybe in the future I may have a new oportunity, but with hogs normally I don't pass shots, I just go bang ! Big Grin

Pigs walk a LOT, so maybe the pig I saw today will be hunted tomorrow 30 km away...

The thing is that is becoming very difficult to bag really monsters, I have heard that in Argentine and in Spain is happing the same, being mostly nocturnal also helps them but I believe we are putting to much hunting preassure in young males and we don't give them enough time to become real monsters. I think an european wild boar (the ones we have here) will need around 7 years to become a monster (normally many game species need 7 or more years..I think).

What happens up there?
Have you the same "ethics" with hogs than with deers or antelopes???

There is one ranch I know of that will not take young boars -- they will have hunters take sows instead.

From the Nail Ranch website:

quote:

If small eating size hogs are what you're looking for, only sows will be taken. No young boars will be harvested.

I know a bunch of guys hunting South Texas and using game cams. Plenty of big boars coming to feeders at night but seldom seen during daylight house. A bunch of bowhunting buddies go to Perdernal every full moon and hunt at night. They usually get 1 or 2 big boars every trip

Another thing you have to remember is that if you are measuring a trophy by the size of the tusk, as I do, hogs often break them off and are continually growing them back. As far as letting them walk to let them grow I think that they are generally too big of a problem in general to ever let walk, especially if a boar is killing live stock as I have seen.

The Hunt goes on forever, the season never ends.

I didn't learn this by reading about it or seeing it on TV. I learned it by doing it.

I'm not really interested in monsters.

I'm usually looking to both eliminate a problem and get something good to eat.

Lorenzo: like you very well know, here the real monsters are very difficult to be seen. It seems certain areas are hunted in excess. Nowadays you must reach deep in the woods, get plenty of thorns in the way, far from the cities and lay waiting for several nights. Lady luck helps certain fellows, but one trophy boar needs at least six trips I guess. And you very well could get frozen over a tree Big Grin

And I thought you guys liked each other. I have been with friends way south in AR at San Humberto. THey have some really large boar there as well as RS and lots of Hare. The really great draw is the fishing. Ar is my second country and I hope to be buried there in due time.

Winggunner: we like them very much, in fact we use to let them win at soccer in order to clasify for the World Cup. Unfortunately they don´t seem able to defeat a second rate team when needed Big Grin Regarding Lorenzo, I´m waiting his news about the incoming visit to Argentina...something wicked this way comes..
To the point: he never answers and afterwards complains about other people´s business hours beer

Winggunner: forget such nonsense about war. There is a nasty business regarding two new cellulose plants to be installed in Uruguay, which the eco freaks and some political opportunists here say will polute the Uruguay River. That river, as you of course should know, is common boundary between the countries and several treatys were signed in the past. The Uruguayan side says that no eco danger is involved, but this is not true for Greenpeace and the Entre Ríos´ Governor. Thus some people from the Argentine town of Gualeguaychú, which is near to the main international bridge, are blocking it. The reported economical loss amounts to more than 200 million dollars and goes on growing. Two days ago the two Presidents agreed on a 90 day truce, but afterwards Tabaré Vázquez, the Uruguayan one, stated that the building will be resumed at once.
That is the present situation. To speak of war between us is of course ridiculous, unless a soccer question arises. Big Grin

Lorenzo, to your original question. If I see a hog I shoot it. Every rancher I talk to says, 'I don't care if you leave the lay, KILL THEM'. I keep all I shoot and shoot (at) all I see.

So Naintal,
I am glad that you are not at war. I have not heard about your problems. You are a guide are you not? Do you know Malalcue in Esquina? It is a lodge for ducks and Pigeon and is owned my by my friend Ariel Semenov. I have killed many birds there over the years. Tell me about your hunts and what you offer not that I will come as I go there to shoot, but I might know other people to send to you. I used to have a presents there in Argentina as I was suppling shot shells for many people prior to 1991. Winchester and Estate Cartridge. My Company was Meridian Export out of Miami, FL.
Do you know Gustavo Olsen from Neuquen? San Humberto? I go there to fish and relax. Argentina is or was my second home. Now I am a poor Gringo school teacher, but happy in my work with the young people. They keep me young young. email direct at Winggunner@att.net
