If you could only have one dog.......

Gentlemen, your dog-hog hunting posts have inspired me to inquire about the dogs you use when hunting them. I have only hunted hogs with dogs on a couple of occasions and I have to say that it is some of the most fun a person can have with their clothes on Big Grin. That said, if you were limited to one dog (God forbid!), due to your living situation, what breed would it be? I'm not talking about catch dogs. Thank you in advance!

One dog huh, not one breed, boy this is tough...I almost said mountain curr, no wait catahoula, no black mouth curr,.....this is tough....I'll get back to you... hmm, current living conditons...I'll go with catahoula, unique dog, does a lot of things well.

Larry

I was always more of a spot and stalk guy, before my introduction to hunting pigs with dogs. My supervisor on the pig reduction program had a personal dog (note singular) that represented the best of the best in my eyes. The dog, Kea, a border collie airedale cross was tall with the nose of an airedale and the incredible intelligence of a border collie. Kea and his owner, Larry, spent every waking moment together, and if Kea couldn't read Larry's mind he sure as hell knew how to listen when it counted. I had the privilege of hunting with the two on several occasions, both in the thick stuff and in a more open area. On one occasion I spotted the pig first and Kea stayed close to us until Larry ushed him onto the pig. That dog was fast and was in the boar's face so quickly, the pig never even knew we were there. Kea was also border collie quick and kept the pig spinning around with feints and barks. Kea never put himself in harm's way and at Larry's command, he backed off 3 or 4 feet and Larry ended it with one shot from an old Winchester 30/30. It was a perfect evening hunt. No worries about lost or hurt dogs out overnight... everything was at our own pace. Kea's long legs made it easier for him to get about in the thick stuff or go for long distances without getting winded; but it was his brain that kept him from getting hurt, let him have fun "playing with the boar", and allowed his owner to call him off at will and take a clean shot. Not your typical hogs & dogs scenario but one that suited my hunting style. I don't know what breed or what build, but when it comes to choosing just one dog... make mine SMART!

Matt

Thanks for the thread Whitworth!

I am not a dog hunter, but if I had to choose one, it would be the official dog breed of Texas, Blue Lacy.

Matt has the right idea, the dog would have to be very smart. I personally don't have enough experience with dogs to give you a good answer. All the breeds I mentioned before I hunted with in small groups. Don't know that the typical curr or catahoula could do what you want by itself. Perhaps there are individual dogs of the breed that certainly could, I just don't know. It would take a special dog though, I think.

regards,
Larry

But does he have a nose, Juan? I don't a dog that catches because I intend to shoot the pigs not stick 'em with a knife.

You're kidding huh Juan? the Dogos can do all that? Man that's unbelieveable. Do you have pictures of them pointing, and retreiving? Guard dog, yeah, I can see that, he would get my attention. Please post pictures if you have them at work on things other than hogs. I might be able to sell the idea to my wife about getting one.

thanks, lm

Mr. Whitworth sir, I can see where this is going. One dog will soon lead to two...., go pick out your knife, got a feeling you'll be needing one soon.

Larry, since Uncle Sam gave me my Kabar, I don't leave home without it by my side! Big Grin But, that said, I like to use a handgun! I don't have the space for multiple dogs, unfortunately.

Me too, I live with three house dogs, and my space is limited as well, if not for my son-in-law I would not be able to hunt as I do. By the way there is nothing wrong with a Kabar for sure. I like hunting with a revolver and back in the day I use to shoot rabbits with my colt .45 acp, on the run after kicking them out of their nest. But a few years ago I missed a standing doe broadside at... naw I ain't tellin how close it was.
