Ever heard of a 2.5x compact with "gradient cross hairs"? I'm told it came off a "Criterion 400 Survey Laser"!

Nope, never heard of such, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.

The magnification of the telescope in most surveying instruments (field levels or transits) is much higher than 2.5X, but it sounds from the information you have that it might have been some kind of sighting aide for some kind of laser (non-optical) transit/level/distance-measuring device.

After drawing a blank from internet research, I called Leupold today. The tech guy had never heard of it either. After consulting with old hands there, finally he learned the answer: Leupold at one time made such "for the Forest Service."

I bought it cheap off Ebay, and if I cannot use it as is, I'll get a new reticle put in by Leupold for $60.

Thank you,

Bill

I have probably eight or ten Leupold 2 1/2 compact scopes and there is alot of variation in body size and reticle size and configuration between them.
The one factor that doesn't change though is they are all tough.

Bill G: If it is possible for you to post a photo of the reticle I think we'd all be interested in seeing it.

I know that a number of different reticles exist (particularly the different duplex reticles found on the Rimfire version), but I was unaware of different physical sizes in the 2.5 Compact. I've owned four or five of them and their dimensions have all been identical. Could you share with us how their dimensions vary?

I believe they are called 'CPC' reticles.

I don't suppose you'd be interested in selling it...?
