I think I might take a trip to So. Dakota for a P.dog hunt. The reviews and testimonials for the Super Sniper scope are rather spectacular. Fix power seems to be going against the grain though. If you were going to get one which power would you recommend?

i wouldn't go to a fixed power. PD shooting is where a variable shines. in the morning or late when the heat is down you can use the higher power, but in the midday there's to much heat mirage for high powers

The SS is indeed a solid scope at a great price. My 10x, rear focus has performed flawlessly and I love it.

That said, I agree with butchloc, a variable would probably be a better choice for the hunting you described.

Are you planning on using a range finder and "dialing" your shots via the turrets, or are you thinking of "leaning" your shots using some kind of range finding or hold over reticle?

Unless you are well versed in "milling" targets, I would suggest a range finder and a hold over reticle like the Leupold LR Varmint, Burris Ballistic Plex reticle or a Nikon with a BDC reticle.

Concerning the latter, I just received a 4-16x "new" Monarch with a BDC reticle on 20 Dec, but I haven't shot it yet. First impressions are excellent though, I will say that.
The new Monarch with it's 4x erector, 4" fixed eye relief, side focus with that good Nikon glass AND PRICE is going to be a winner, I think.

Novice shooters @ SWFA were shooting cans of shaving cream @ 500 yards fairly easily when using the BDC reticle and a range finder. Supposed to work with most any caliber, which remains to be seen by me.

I think I would have more fun hunting varmints with a BDC reticle and a range finder, as opposed to "clicking" or trying to "mill" those shots and fight mirage.

Good luck and good shooting!!

Thanks for the advice.

I looked through variable Nikon Monarch and B&L 4200 yesterday both with plex reticles and couldn't tell any difference in the store.

What is the most popular range for PD? Is 14x enough?

During early morning and late afternoon, higher powers will work ok. But, during mid day, when mirage is heavy, 14x is about max.
