Anyone have experience with a VX-3 1.5-5x20mm? I traded for a used one at the gun show. I thought it was for a pistol but I was wrong. Since I have read it is for rifles what is your experience with this scope either good or bad? Thank you for your assistance. BTW I have other Leupold scopes so far they are the best I own. It's an excellent lower magnification variable. If you hunt something which is close, fast, or really big, the minimal magnification and large field of view at the low end make it a very quick scope to use. Cranked up to the high end it has enough magnification to allow fairly precise zeroing and provides adequate definition for shooting typical game animals at several hundred yards.

I have two of them one on a Drilling and one on a Combination gun. They are also popular on dangerous game guns. About perfect for my use with most shots inside of 100 yards and a few out to 200 on occasion. Light weight, clear image, rugged and the Leupold warranty. What's not to like? They are great slug gun scopes and driving/brush-busting scopes.

I only know that the VX-3s are one of the lines with the double rare-metal springs, which should help against the punishment of recoil hammering the erector tube. The low top power is good for old people who forget to wind back. I recently turned my VX-1 2-7 up to 6x for a long shot at feral goats, and left it there in case another one was needed. Next day I was walking through higher scrub when some more burst from cover and ran across in front of me at 20 yards. I was able to chest-shoot a suitably small one (for meat) not realising the scope was still on 6x. Imagine if I'd been sporting a 2-12 variable, maxed out from the night before.

Stonecreek has it right. I had one on my 375H&H and killed a ton of game with it. Shortest shot was a few yards, longest two were about 275yds, once on a zebra and once on a bushbuck, which is about the size of a whitetail doe. Most of the game I shot with it was with the scope at 1.5x and inside of 100yds, though on longer shots I would dial it up to 5x. I went to a S&B 1.1x4x24mm scope for the 375 for it's better low light performance but still minimal low end and the Leupold 1.5x5x20mm now resides on my son's 20ga slug gun. He has used it to kill a bunch of whitetails out to about 100yds. The Leupold would be great on a rifle or shotgun where the use is most often inside of 200yds or so - which covers a whole lot of hunting. JPK Free 500grains

I have one on my Sako Av in 375. When hunting, I never had it cranked past 2X and my shots ranged from 40 to 275 yards.. The only time I ever use it on 5X is at the bench. The one complaint I have with it though, is the eye relief is not very forgiving if you have to make a quick shot. I have "scoped" myself a couple times, but didn't draw blood. For that reason, I have been considering replacing it with either a Zeiss Duralyt or maybe even a Minox with the same magnifications, and an additional inch of eye relief. NRA Benefactor. I have one on my .416 Taylor. I've shot hundreds of rounds through it with the 1.5x5 on it and it has held up great for many years. I'm going to buy another for my .375. I know others that have them on other hard kickers and they seem to be happy with it. Shot a Grizzly two years ago with the .416 and that scope. Regards.

I am having a 404Jefferys and a 450/375 RUM ( aka 460 G&A) stocked as we speak. That scope would be perfect on either one. Rich

I have the 30mm metric illuminated model on a 375 so not a true comparison I guess, but I'm really pleased with mine. It has seen quite a bit of hunting and a LOT of shooting. Optics are clear, field of vision good and zero has been rock solid. Mount the scopes further forward on the heavy recoiling rifles, you won't regret it. It is seldom a problem when a scope needs a bit of craning of the neck for a deliberate shot but I tend to stock creep when I'm hurried.

That's my go-to Africa scope. Have one on a 375, another on a 458 Lott. My light Africa rifle wears a 1 3/4 x 6 VXIII. Totally satisfied. These scopes have survive some heavy recoil and some very hard knocks.
