I have a 1950's era M99-R and an old school El Paso Weaver K4 scope. I want to configure this rifle to a 1950's retro style rig. It came from Savage with a factory d&t. What would have been period correct 1950's rings and bases? FWIW, I mounted the scope on this gun with modern Weaver bases and Burris Zee rings. It made a very good hunting rig, retro or not. Thanks in advance ZM

The Weaver/Zee Ring combo is hard to beat for function and appearance, although the Zee's are not exactly "period". My 1939 vintage Savage 99 has a Redfield base that came with the old-style narrower Redfield rear ring. That's about as period as you can get. It came with a Kollmorgen Bear Cub, but it was rather cloudy, so I replaced it with a Weaver K-3. Unfortunately, this required me to get 1" rather than 26mm rings, and I could only find the newer, wider rings in a 1". So I lost a bit of the "period" effect. I recently acquired both a Leupold M7 4x and a Leupold M7 3x scope which are being held in reserve for some indeterminate "period" project.
