I am trying to decide on a scope for my next rifle (heavy bbl .300 Win Mag), which I will hopefully be purchasing in the next couple months. I am trying to figure out if there is a substantial difference in quality between the new Leupold VX-6 and their VX-R line.

I was able to handle one of the new VX-6 scopes in 3-18x50mm at the NRA Convention a couple weeks ago....and it was very nice, but I am also considering the VX-R in 4-12x50mm.

The VX-6 goes for $1,300 from OpticsPlanet.com and the VX-R goes for $650. Does anyone know if there is a difference in the coatings, or overall quality, between the two scopes? If not, I have a hard time justifying the extra expense of the VX-6 (which is exactly double) merely for a slightly wider range of magnification.

I think the VX-6 is better. I looked at both.

The VX-6 has a much better sight picture/alignment. I always found Leupolds to be a lot more finicky than other scopes on eye alignment and eye relief. The VX-6 is great in this department and works like my Zeiss and Weaver scopes.

Second, the VX-6 has superior optics to the VX-R, basically their latest stuff. And it has a 30mm tube.

Like I said, I looked real close at the VX-6 and VX-R for my Mauser M03 375 H&H and 300 Weatherby. I went with Zeiss Victory Diavari T* in 1.5-6x42 and 2.5-10x42.

If you are looking to save $$$, go with the Zeiss Conquest HD5 line. That was my backup plan.

FYI....both scopes I am referring to have 30mm tubes.

Also, the VX-6 and VX-R came out very close to each other, and both utilize the same illumination system.

ES,

I have both. I used the VX R 1.25x 4 on elephant and buff last year and it performed well, but I have been buying the VX6 ( bought 5) and replacing 1" Leupys with them . I think of the VXRs as VXII optics in a 30 mm tube with illumination. I think the VX6 is true 30 mm optics with illumination and a true 6x where the VX R is 3x. Both are good but the VX 6 is better.

I have VX-6 scopes on my Sako 375 H&H, Searcy 9.3x74R stalking rifle and my Sako
.300 WSM. They are great scopes and worth every penny.

What caliber were you using? I'm need a scope for my 404J. I was thinking about the Weaver 1-5x24mm, but the VX-R 1.25-4x24mm is the same price and illuminated.

I think that's what I'll get then.

AH,

I hate to add confusion to your decision but the VXR 1.25 x 4 is 20mm, and the VX6 1 x 6 is 24mm.

I really don't think you can go wrong either way.
