Out just looking at rifles today looking for a .223 Rem bolt rifle. Came across a Mauser 98 in .338 Win Mag with a Stoeger fixed 8X32 rifle scope. While I'm considering going back and picking up this rifle, the scope will not stay on it.

The scope had a fine cross hair that just will not do for early morning hunting. I was thinking however of mounting it on my .22 Mag or my .223 Ultra Varmint. Does any one know who made these scopes for Stoeger and were they any good?

Don't know who made them. Possibly Hakko, which built a lot of proprietary scopes; but it could have been anyone in Asia with an optical plant and a sales rep.

What it has going for it is that it is a fixed power. The relative simplicity of the fixed scope make most of them, even the cheap ones, fairly serviceable. Manufacturers of inexpensive scopes start getting into trouble quick with the mechanism, sealing, and focus challenges inherent in a variable. Their base-line optics also give problems as magnification goes up.

Being fixed with a magnification of 8x, I'd say there's a good chance that the scope would do about as well as any on a .22 magnum. If that Ultravarmint is one of the converted shotguns from NEF, then the scope is all it needs, also.
