I am mounting a scope on a 375 H&H for the first time. Do I need to use friction paper? If so where do I get it? Leupold bases and rings are being used. Thanks.

For use on the 375 I would have the rings lapped for near 100% contact and use double dovetail base/rings for greater strength.....the friction paper will work most of the time but if you get a bad set of tolerance stack on the rings and torque them down firmly they can bind the internal scope works and cause problems.....this is from my 300H/H and friends 338 and I haven't really worked with a 375 and the one 458 I didn't get any follow up on how it worked with the setup.....hth...good luck and good shooting!!

No. Foreign matter in between the scope and the ring can damage the scope.

There is no substitute for proper metal-to-metal fit. However, most quality scope rings do not require lapping, and in fact unnecessary lapping could leave you with a loose fit. Do it only if you really have a problem, and then do it sparingly.

The last way a scope mount is likely to fail is allowing the scope to slip in the rings. You are much more likely to have trouble with the mating of the rings and bases, or with the mating of the bases on the receiver.

The .375 may seem like a hard kicker, but it actually requires only a reasonably well designed and made scope mount -- and no unusual precautions or set-up.
