I have three. Used one quite a bit on a Kimber 270 for a deer rifle. Its a 3x-9x-40mm Firedot. I really like the illumintated DOT late in the evening in a treestand. Its automatic which makes it nice. I keep mine turned down very low. 30mm tube makes them less trim than most and a little heavier but...

I used one in Africa a year ago and love it! I have quick detachable mounts on it and I wouldn't use anything else. The adjustable brightness is very helpful and I found it invaluable for hunting dark colored animals like Wildebeest in the evening when normal cross hairs would disappear on a dark hide.

DH, the firedot reticle, when turned on, will shut itself off if the scope detects no movement for a few minutes. I am not sure how long it waits but this feature will save batteries if it doesn't get manually shut off.
I have a 4-12X40 VX R on a 270Win and love it, but I haven't shot anything but paper with it so far.

Thanks for the info. I will be buying the 3-9x40 FireDot. Are the posts on the FireDot 4 heavier than the posts on the FireDot Duplex?

Thanks Butch. That's what I was afraid of. We might run into each other at the Lafayette gun show in a few weeks. Big Grin

I have the 3-9 firedot on my usual deer rifle, a BLR in .308. I got a nice buck with it last Dec. in a foggy, shaded hollow- - I don't know what the out come would've been if I had a fine wire, non-illumunated reticle. The Leupold is proving more reliable than my Zeiss illuminated scope! I don't think I'll go back to "unlit" scopes, I'm taking the Zeiss (now fixed) to Zim on a buffalo hunt soon...

I am curious why Leupold made a 3x9 FireDot instead of a 3.5x10 FireDot?

Doug,

I believe the VX R are simply VX II optics put in a 30mm tube, therefore, they are the same models, etc. with illumination. for example the 1.25x4 is listed as 20mm, where the VX 6 is totally new optics, it is listed as 1x6x24mm in 30mm.
IMHO that is why they can offer them at half the price of the VX 6. I could be wrong of course, but that is the way I think of these scopes. The VXII are very dependable optics and my VXR has been just as good BUT with illumination.

Interesting observation Begno. IF Leupold did use use one inch VXII DIAMETER glass in the VX-R 30MM tubes then there would be NO more light transmission than through a 1" tube. That would be EXTREMLY disappointing IF that is the case.

I have two VXR 3x9's sitting on my desk, neither of which have been mounted yet. One has a 40mm objective and is going on a .358WSM and the other has a 50mm objective and is reeplacing a 3.5x10 VXL on a .300 WSM, that I plan on using for leopard in October. I really like the VXL, but wanted an illuminated reticle for leopard. Sorry I can't give you an experience report. But, I'm committed in any event.
