I have a 458 win mag that weighed a shade under 8 lbs. with no scope. That gun kills on both ends with full house 500 gr hand loads. I do not suspect many scopes could with stand the "jolt" repeatly. So I added a mercury tube for weight, glass the action (few ounces) and with a scope and rings, I hope to increase the gun to 9.5 lbs. My intention is to place a 1.5 X 5 Leupold VX 3 on this gun. I have found a non illuminated Swar Z 6 (1 X 6 X 24) for a shade under $1000.00. I can get the Leupold for $400.00. I like the 6X magnification of the Swarovski but are they as tough as the little VX 3. I have always heard these heavy scopes, recoil really effects them. The Swar is almost twice the weight of the Leu. For those that have used this specific Z6 (1 X 6 X 24). Do you think it is worth twice the price of the VX 3 (1.5 X 5). EZ

I know the 1.5 X 5 Leupold VX 3 will hold-up on your 458 Win. Mag.. I have used them on many heavy recoiling rifles including 3, 458 Winny’s without any problems. I don’t think it is worth trying the Swaro Z 6, I am skeptical if it would hold-up, don’t know for sure. Why gamble.

eezridr: As you know, you and I have the same rifle. I put a Swarovski PH 1-4 w/illuminate circle dot on mine and it works just great. I have had several large caliber rifles with Swarovskis and Leupolds on them...never had a failure with a Swarovski but I have had a 2.5x fixed Leupold fail on a 458 win. mag. and a 1.5-5 Leupold fail on a 458 Lott....Leupold fixed them and I use those scopes as back-ups... My choice would be the Swarovski and for $1000 it is an easy choice for me...only question I would have is clearance with the bolt handle, etc...
