Docter scopes are good value for money. Period! Over here they are rated second to the top 4: Zeiss, Schmidt&Bender, Kahles, Swarovski. If the price tag of one of these is to steep for you, go for a Docter. Do consider however buying a Schmidt&Bender or a Zeiss if you can afford one.

Agree w/reindeer! And, yes, I have one Dr Optic, the 6x42, and am very satisfied with it so far but I've only had it a year. Don't know if you hunt at night down under . . . Mine's on a daytime rifle, recommend if you plan to hunt at night it would be wise to step up a notch in size, to a 3-9 or 12 x 50 or 56, jmho, Waidmannsheil, Dom. -------- There are those who only reload so they can shoot, and then there are those who only shoot so they can reload. I belong to the first group. Dom ---------

Thanks for the replies guys, the scopes going on a 375H&H for Sambar deer hunting day light hrs, the importer here has them for AUS $800, most shots are under 150mtrs, had a Leupold 1.5x5 on it but it failed after a session at the rifle range, that's the second Leupold I've had problems with and the last..Les

tracks, I have have lots of good quality optics on many rifles; Zeiss, Swarovski, S&B, Kahles, Leupold, Nikon, Weaver Grand Slams, etc. Many of these scopes are vanilla-flavored 6x42's. They are outstanding optics for hunting. My "Go To & Grab - Take Anywhere Rifle" is a .30/06 Sprg., Blaser R93, that accompanies me Around-the-World hunting and has a Docter 2.5-10x48 w/illuminated recticle on it - great value and a fantastic scope for the $$$. From my experience, and it is considerable; I would recommend a Docter optic. Cheers, Number 10

Just bought a new Leupold 1.5-5 for a #3 Ruger in 375 Winchester. What did fail on your Leupold. I had several Leupolds, one on a 300 Wby for 25years. Never had any trouble with any of them. Fred M. zermel@shaw.ca

Gerry I'm the same mate,if in doubt grab the 30.06, thanks for the info...Les Zermel, I own many older Leupolds all have done the job and still going except the V111 1.5x5 and a V11 2x7 I purchased about 12mths ago, the 1.5x5 lasted about 30 rounds on my 375H&H...sighting in was done with about 10 rounds all was well until I went back to the range after missing a easy shot on a deer and found I was spraying shots all over the place no matter what I did I could'nt hold zero, replaced the scope with a old V11 3x9 and back on the money all falling into the 1" @ 100mtrs, what I did notice was that the cross hairs were for a better word "vibrating" on the pull of the trigger and no doubt settling back in a different postion, it's soon to be packed up and sent back to the factory, the 2x7 well one of the cross hairs fell off after a short period at the range on a 338 mag. that's the last Leupolds I buy...hope your is alright it just might be the stuff they are sending us over here in Aus.

I can only tell you about the only one I've seen around here.... Just this weekend a Guy at the range had bought one and installed it on his 25-06. Good Glass but he didn't have enough elevation adjustment. His mounts and set-up looked fine but, He had to max out the up elevation adjustment to get the scope zeroed. That would worry me, I prefer them to be zero somewhat close to the center of adjustment. Must have just been a dud but, like I said, had good glass. Good Luck Reloader

I'm hoping one of the German AR members can confirm, but I was led to believe that Doctor scopes are in fact made by the Zeiss factory that fell on the wrong side of the iron curtain, in Jena. If that's true, then in a sense it's a Zeiss from former East Germany. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Wink, that is true. Docter uses the former Carl Zeiss Jena facilities. The fact that they are rated second to Zeiss has a lot to do with name and marketing, but on the other hand I doubt whether they invest as much in innovation as the Zeiss people do. So, they are good quality scopes, but not 'state of the art' By the way, I own Carl Zeiss Noblilem 7x50 binoculars, made in the early 90's in Jena and I fail to see any difference in performance with today's Zeiss products, even in the dark! So the people in Jena knew and still know what they are doing!

I own a Docter. The optics are nice and clear, but I do have a few complaints about it. The rear focusing ring is very easy to move, and mine always moved on its own during the day, making everything blurry when you looked through the scope. I also ran out of elevation adjustment on mine that was mounted on a 338 Win. Had it all the way cranked and was just barely hitting where I wanted it. Another thing, the eye relief sucks, so if you throw it on a hard kicker, good luck. That is the reason I took it off my 338. It jumped up and just barely hit my shooting glasses a couple of times and that was enough. I put on a Leupold. ALSO...I am not sure, but i think they may have gone under. CDNN was selling them cheap and claiming they bought the remaining inventory. I also could not find their website anymore.

They didn't go down. Selling inventor probably means they will join Zeiss, Swarovski, S&B and Kahles in the new rage of producing shorter and lighter scopes.
