So here is the deal. I have a mint 700 bdl in 338 that I want to put on a nice big 4-12X50 mm scope. It currently has a 4x32.

The scope is mounted in Leupold mounts with low profile rings. What ring height do I need for the 50mm without taking off the open sights??

I'd say it would probably take high rings. I have several 700s with 42 and 44 mm objectives without irons that take medium rings. I have a 40 mm on a 700 with iron sights and it has to have mediums to clear the iron sights.

My dad told me once that if you're gonna kill a rattler with a chainsaw, use the top of the bar.

I would suggest a Conquest 3.5x14x44. Won't have to change ring height and they are real nice.

as it turns out I had to switch from the 4-12 to a 2-10 with the 50 because with my long neck and the long scope the 4-12 hit the rear sight. I now have 1/32 of an inch between the scope bell and the rear sight using some extra-high Leupolds. Thanks for the help.

Conquest would have been a good idea too.

We have a feral pig issue on one of the ranches that needs worked out again, so the 338 comes out of retirement.....She is know by two names.....'bang-flop' and my friends laugh about her being the 'cranium cracker'

She might have touch my forehead once when I had a poor hold leaning over a bank for a shot.

Page 1 in the Leupold user manual notes that you want the lowest rings you can mount.

Remove the rear sight. Remove the front sight. You can probably sell them on GunBroker. Besides which, you're mounting glass. You don't need no steenkin' iron sights.

Ditto.

I HATE large objectives that force you to use high rings, thus forcing you to lift your head off the stock. I want them mounted as low as possible.
