I have removed the scope from my CZ 550fs. I could not believe how much lighter and handier it is without a scope. So this morning I ordered a NECG peep sight from Brownell's. This will be my deer rifle. I still hunt mostly and have other rifles to sit over fields with. Are any of you still using mechanical peep sights on hunting rifles? and are there any limitations? Worst comes to worser, I can alway remount the scope.

I got bored with sniping with scopes about the time I noticed my eyes declining. I pretty much quit using scopes then just to maximize the time I had left to shoot metallic sights. All rifles carry much better with out a huge boat anchor on top. The huge German clunkers are the worst in my book. They are ugly, clumsy and more expensive than many rifles.
I was surprised at the range I learned more about lighting and target and back ground contrast. So I can still shoot ok there even with old military rifles. With aperture fronts and tang sights I can shoot groups near 1".

When the light fades or there is shadows and tree limbs then a scope is much better but then I use a 1" straight bell 2.5X or 3X scope if I can. They are much handier.
But you can often avoid this with a receiver sight and a good Patridge front sight.

For long shots at small varmits I use conventional 1" variables and live with the bulk. But never ever will I mount one of those huge German clunkers...

Thanks for the input. I received and installed the sight. I'm pleased with the quality, I now have to get myself to the range.
