I'm hoping that someone can help with a question. I purchased a rifle with a Lyman Alaskan scope mounted on it which is the later prefix A series design. It would help enormously if it had about 1/4" more eye relief. I have another Alaskan but unfortunately it is also an A prefix. Somewhere in my memory bank is the idea that earlier Alaskan's had longer eye relief's but at the cost of a slightly reduced field of view. Does anyone know this for sure as I hate to buy the earlier model with the short rear housing based upon my memory. Thanks so much and happy Holidays... Edward Lundberg

Nick Stroebel does not seem to mention an A prefix but he does say the early models had exposed adjustments and from 1944 came as "all-weather" scopes with weatherproof caps and "moisture proof" internal adjustments. Interestingly, the "Fixed" Alaskan (with no internal adjustments) did not come out until 1953, perhaps in answer to B&L. A 1944 ad for the new model did make much of its long (five-inch) eye relief but Nick just lists three-to-five inches, without mentioning any changes over the years.
