Drew,

The Scout scope was designed to be mounted forward of the receiver, over the barrel. Normally a Scout scope is around 2.5x and is a medium eye relief - about 10" of eye relief or so.

as to the value? Dunno. Prolly around $200 or so. The Scout concept never really seemed to catch on.

Regards,

Robert

I posted because I bought into the scout concept many years ago and had a rifle modified to my specs. Remy 700varmint 308. Shorten barrel to 20 inches, recessed crown, fluted, and scout scoped. I have had this rifle in that configuration for about 10 years. I hunted with it 3 or 4 times and it never really seemed to work as intended. I recently installed a Leupy 1.5-5x20 in the "normal" location above the receiver and PRESTO!! I have everything I was looking for. On low power I can still shoot both eyes open and have an even larger field of view.

So I was testing the waters to see if this scope is worth anything, or if there is still a demand for it. I cant seem to think of a real useful thing to do with it......time to sell.

I have a couple Leupold Scouts and I use for a slightly different purpose than what they were designed for. I have them mounted as scopes on my Anschutz 17P and Exemplar bolt action pistols. They work really well for varmint shooting as they very flexible in terms of focal length. I can shoot with them with my arms outstretched or with my elbows pulled into my chest for a more stable rest. They also have a much larger field of vision that a typical 2x pistol scope so it makes finding the critters easier. I would imagine they would work really well on something like a Remington XP-100.

As far a worth goes the new ones are $279 to $289 at the moment. I would pay $200 for an average one with perfect glass but a few ring marks and $225 for one that was 100% perfect.

The mid distance eye relief scope was originally designed to mount on rifles like the 94 Winchester with top ejection which could not accomodate a scope in the "normal" position. A few yo-yos and promoters adopted this "idea" as their own and the "scout" concept was born.

The laws of optics dictate that the longer the eye relief, the narrower the field of view. These long eye relief scopes could only have been promoted as "fast", or "quick-pointing" in a market which is short on experience and long on hype.

As webfeet points out, they are better used as a shorter eye relief pistol scope than as a rifle scope. And as you've discovered, putting your rifle scope where it belongs works best.
