Scope recomendation for Anschutz 222

Looking for a scope mount on a Anschutz 222 that will be a walking varmint gun. I would like something with a top end of magnification at 12x or larger but most scopes I see now are huge in length & weight & would overwhelm the gun. Quality & size of the scope is more important than cost but I would prefer to keep this under $1,000.
Recommendation for a smaller sized quality scope I should look at?

I like to use the Leupold Compact 3-9X (now called Ultralight) on my small action Sakos, which are similar in size to your Anschutz. It's 33mm objective and properly proportioned body are just right for small action, lightweight .22 centerfires.

As Stonecreek suggests, big scopes are really overdoing it on a small-framed 222. Usually considered only a 250-yard cartridge, it used to be thought only to need a 6x scope. Nickel even made a 6x36 thought by some to be meant for little rifles like that, though it would not be much good once the light faded. So yes, I think a 3-9 or even a 2-7 would be good enough. I would try to get something with a slightly larger objective lens in the 3-9 model, though.

Hello Ken,

Walking with a 12X? Might be a bit much, especially on a triple deuce. Suggest looking at Leupold 6x42 with AO. Or try to kick up a good used Docter Optic 6x. The Docter is 26mm but by using Brownells Delrin reducers, 30mm to 26mm, you will avoid ring marks.

Take a look at the Zeiss 4.5 to 14 with the one inch tube. I have one on a 22LR Blaser R 93 and I really like it. While it is fairly long it is still light weight, and most important for a 22LR, or any gun that may be used up close to far off it has a focus/paralax adjustment.

I would look at the Leupold VX-2 4-12X. Here is a much older Vari-X II, dimensionally the same, on my Krico 222 that is quite similar to the Anschutz in size. About as light and compact you can get with what you are after.

In the early 1980's Leupold made a fixed 8 power with a 36mm front objective. When you see it, it looks like their 6x but is about 1/4 inch longer. The scope is a lovely size on carrying Varminter's. I believe Leupold brought it out in response to Kimber of Oregon 84 owners who wished to either mount a scope on their quarter rib package with levered rings or just wanted to use low mounts. I've been thrilled with these as they don't overpower the rifles look. If I remember correctly they were made for 2 or 3 years and were subsequently discontinued, so one needs to search them out however it's worth the effort as they're just a great addition.

Good luck, Ed...

Ken, I have a Kahles straight 6X coming in Tuesday on a Steyr SSG 69. My favorite scope is the 4.5x14...I have 6 or 6 of them. Mine are all 30mm, but you could get a 1" tube 40mm that would work great on the 222.

I agree with the Leupold VX2 4-12. Here is one on my Annie 1416. I don't feel that it overpowers the rifle or is so heavy as to destroy handling.

That's a hell of a bell for a .22, RH. What do you do with it that made you get something that big?

I've got an old 4x40 on my 1416 and feel a bit sheepish even about the size of that. Time was when special smaller scopes were sold for rimfires. Money was harder to find then but I could never come at that stuff, either.

I own an Anschütz 1710 in .22 LR. It uses the same 54 Match action which is also chambered in .222 Rem (even in .22, the 54 action includes a recoil lug). I've also mounted a Leupold 4-12x Vari X-II AO and am quite satisfied with the combination.

I do squirrel hunt with it and don't find the scope too big for good handling, but I like to shoot tiny holes at distance the most. I like the extra magnification for targets.

You guys must have steadier hands than I have. I used to do most of my rabbit shooting standing up because of the long grass, and usually managed head shots out to 60 yards or so.

But if I had to do that at 14x, I'd probably give up in disgust at the shake.

I rarely shoot a squirrel over 4X, I just don't have to change scopes when I want to shoot bug holes at 50 yards.

Are there rules to shooting bug holes, RH, or is it just informal target shooting?

I once shot on a team and played a lot of games. Now I just shoot for fun.

I use a straight 10x on mine. Looks good and always enough power for a .222.
