I finally took my new Savage 12 BVSS out this morning to shoot it but immediately ran into some problems with the scope. Its a Nikon Monarch 6.5-20x44. I have the target knobs installed but I don't have enough windage adjustment. The turrets are graduated like a micrometer and numbered from 1-7. It seems once I get to 6 the crosshairs won't move any farther throughout the rest of the adjustment range. I'm not sure if this is normal or not...I need to move the point of impact about 3" right at 100 yards and I also have very little elevation adjustment left. I have about 1/2" space between the objective and the barrel so the ring height should be correct.
I have the scope mounted in Burris Signature high rings using the standard inserts. I'm guessing I'll need a package of offset inserts. I've never used this style of ring before, but I'm assuming the inserts will correct windage issues as well as elevation? It looks like they come in pairs of .005", .010", and .020" offset. Can the inserts be mixed, or do they need to be matched to each other? I've never had this type of problem with all the scopes I've mounted so I'm not sure what to try next.
You got the right idea; the offset inserts are the solution. I cured the same problem on my Rem 700 varmint. You can mix them as you prefer; I only had to use a .010 offset at 45° in the front ring and the rear is the standard one. I said 45° since it moved the scope slightly low and on the right compared to the rear standard ring
Thanks, I just ordered the whole set of inserts with all three sizes. I would like to use this rifle for long range shooting so I also need as much elevation adjustment on the scope as possible. Hopefully I'll be able to figure out how to set it up.
I shoot on my own property and the farthest I have space to shoot is around 600 yards. I just need enough elevation adjustment to compensate for bullet drop and as it is I only have about a dozen clicks left on the elevation turret.
