I have a little rubber gizmo that simply fits over the ocular bell of scopes and it helps prevent half-moon cuts. (Not a lens cover!)

For the life of me,I can't remember the correct name of this product or the mfg. I'm pretty sure I bought it from Midway a few years back.
They were very inexpensive.

If anyone recognizes this item and has some info, please post.

Thanks!

Thanks for that tip. I am going to order a few tomorrow. On a hog hunt this past March, I was stalking on foot, it was getting dark, I got as close as I could but had a hard time seeing the reticle of the scope mounted on my 45-70 guide gun. So I inched my eye a little closer - result - blood on both ends......I recovered, the hog did not. beer

Great thread!

Even though my .375 Ouch & Ouch has a Leupold 2.5 - 8x on it (known for good eye relief) a friend managed to cut himself badly.

I'm going to see if the company will ship 4 of them to Sweden without asking a king's ransom for shipping!

I ordered six last night.
Three to keep and three to dole out amongst friends' Shipping was Very reasonable (of course that was from Georgia to Texas).

You might consider buying half a dozen or so- at $2.99 each.

If you have friends that shoot, I'm sure they will want one of these little jewels after they see them. And they can help defray some of the shipping costs you incur.

I know these littles protectors have saved me a case of the "half moon" eye on at least a couple occasions!

I won't say that being whacked with the little rubber bumper isn't better than being hit directly with the metal of the ocular bell, but the rubber won't save you from a cut or a bad bruise -- only properly positioning your scope and having a stock that fits you can do that. Ironically, the rubber actually reduces the distance between your eye and the scope, thus making the liklihood eye (actually, brow) contact with the scope greater.

The rubber bushing is about like placing a piece of masking tape on the surface of a hammer and presuming that it will save you from a headache if someone hits you in the head with it.

Stonecreek,
I have to disagree with you on this one!

After 40 years of shooting, and 4 years of competitive shooting in the Corps, I'm well aware of stocks and the property way to mount them. Hmmm.. that didn't sound just right.

The rubber in this little eyepiece is moderately thick and HAS saved my eye on a couple occasions. Mostly when I'm contorted in a treestand.

And especially on Vari-X oculars. They are sharp. And they do not seem to affect eye relief.

But, thanks for your input!

michauxii:

We're not in complete (but respectful) disagreement, but my take is that it is very little better to be bumped by the rubber than the metal, and it is much better to be bumped by neither.

In the cases in which you are bumped by the rubber and not significantly injured it is my contention that you might not have been bumped at all had you had the full eye relief of the scope to work with, rather than having it reduced by the thickness of the rubber guard.

To illustrate just how traumatic a blow from a "soft" medium can be, last weekend I was sighting in a friend's new rifle for him. I was wearing a gimme cap (baseball type cap), the bill of which happened to unknowingly drop in between the scope ocular and my forehead. Upon the shot (and this was just a .308) I felt a sudden whack across my forehead that was from the scope hitting the forward bill of the cap and transmitting the energy through the edgewise cardboard in the bill of the cap to my forehead. Although not injurious, it sure as the devil got my attention! It was quite a sharp and very annoying rap!

By the same token, while the rubber eye guard on a scope may slightly lessen the injury, if you get a real scope bang, even the rubber will still make a nice bruised, if not bloody, crescent on your brow!

You're welcome to use the eye guard if you choose, but I'd prefer the extra clearance.

I've still seen blood drawn with heavy kicking rifles even while wearing the rubber Scope Eye.

I do have them on a couple rifles (a lightweight .378 Wby. for one!) and I'm sure they'll save you in a few situations but they're substitute for simple basics.
