Just picked up a new Sako 75. Never owned one before and need to pick out some rings. I will be using a leupold 2X8 and really like my scopes on the lowish side. Thanks for your help.

This site may help you with both bases and rings if you are interested in SAKO. I will be using these on my custom model 75 in .17 Remington once completed by Greg Tannel.

What caliber?? If the caliber is not too "lively", consider a pair of Leupold Sako mounts. They are about as low as you can get them, and a good deal cheaper than either Talleys or Optilocks.

See "Ordering Info" link for Sako information...

I use Optilocks on most of my Sako's but I think Mike's advice is right on here. As long as it's in a light recoiling caliber the Leupy mounts are going to get you mounted lower than any Optilocks will. "Lowish" and Optilocks don't really go together................DJ

Its a 7-08, so I assume that the leupolds would work?

I use the Leupold ring mounts on a Sako AV in .280 Rem. The scope is the same you consider, a Leupold 2.5-8x36. I have experienced no problems whatsoever with this combination.

The Leupold rings allow the scope to be mounted as low as physically possible.

Also a fan of the Leupold Ring Mount. They scoped a Conquest on a M75 .300 WM and never moved.

That said...I probably would still recommend the Talley's. They are the best mounting system I used on that rifle.
Either the Loopie or the Talley's are better than the Opti-Locs.

The Sako Optilock is VERY high, even in the lowest model. It is also VERY expensive.

As others have advised, the Leupold ringmount is low, lightweight, simple, relatively inexpensive and works well with the "light recoiling" calibers like the .375 H&H I have them on (as well as a .338, .300 Win, and a plethora of lesser calibers).

Depending on how far fore or aft you mount your 36mm Leupold, you may be able to use the "low" Leupold, or it may require the "medium" if your objective bell sits directly over the large part of the barrel (chamber section). If your bell extends just beyond the chamber section, then the low will work. I have a 33mm Leupold mounted in low rings that sits exactly over the chamber bulge and it BARELY clears.

Conetrols are very nice but expensive! If I have a nice custom rifle where irons would never be used. I always buy Conetrols. The sleekest on the market and very strong.

Cheaptrick,

Just curious about your comment. Obviously you have had some bad experiences with Conetrols. I have them on about 6 very nice custom rifles although none in caliber above a 30-06.
They are a pain in the ass to install relative to typical Leupold / Talley / Warne but are very attractive and I have never seen a scope slip with them on.
I have even cut my hand installing the top cap which can be very sharp but they have always held the scope to my gun with no issues.
I have about every ring type scope mount made in the USA and really find little issue with any of them if they are installed properly up to 416 Remington.

eeridr, obviously Cheaptrick is from the hood and is talking hip-hop-ese to you. He concurs that the conetrols are an excellent product.

Pete E, that is the first time I've seen the optilock ring mounts. Are they a new offering by Sako? I haven't seen any over here.I like the looks a lot better than the ring/base setup i just bought and I'm certain they are lighter!!

GoWyo, it is very doubtful that Optiloks are lighter, they are heavy rings. But the ringmount version doesn't have a base... Did you go with Leupold Ringmounts? The optiloks are a much higher quality mount IMO. Talley's are as well.

Conetrols are the only thing I haven't tried, I attempted to order 6 or 8 sets once, and it was an excercise in mass frustration--the 2 different guys I spoke to there added up to about 5 idiots! If I saw a set available from a distributor I might try a set, but I doubt that to happen....

Look at Leupold QD's also, they are nicer of the Leupies IMO

Howdy Fish,

I won a bid on Ebay for some low Optilocs with the long base, they fit my 6x42 leupold very well. I did well on the price too. 73 bux to my door. I haven't seen the ringmounts in real life, just on Pete's rifle. Beretta doesn't have any available.

GoWyo, that is a great price on a set of Optiloks. They are really good quality rings, and I'm sure they'll do you well. I haven't ordered a set of the Optilok ringmounts for myself, but found some on line and put them on a friends 75 WSM, he loves them.

Good shooting--Don
