My Leica 8x32's have served me well over the past ~20 years...they are not too big, not too small. But I find myself doing a lot of long range glassing now and need a bit more juice so I'm looking to get some 10x42's. I do have budget constraints; I'd like to keep it between $250-$500. I've been looking at some lower end Steiners, Vortex, Leupold, and even a Zeiss Terra.

Suggestions?

Check out some of the bird watcher forums. Those guys seem to know their optics.

You might also look into Bushnell Legends. They are pretty good glass for binoculars in that price range.

The Meoptas are nice.

I have a pair of Japanese Vortex Viper HDs in 10x42 and they are very nice for the money. The new Chinese-made ones, well not so much. Rokslide is a great place for picking up used optics.

Funny, you are looking for 10s, I’m thinking about the Leica 8x32s...

BaxterB, the Leica 8x32's have served me well. I got them at a gunshop where they had sat for a couple years and still had an old price (over $300 cheaper) so I bought them. But I am spending a lot of time looking for laid-up mule deer across canyons and elk in distant timber. Hence, I want to go with 10x

In that price range I would go with Leopold's 10x42 tu2 or 40's witch ever they are?

Go to your nearest sports outlet and try a few. See which ones tickle your fancy. Optics can be pretty subjective.

Good advice Wstrnhuntr. Went to a couple places today and coon-fingered several different binos. Decided to save up my money and go top shelf. I am now intrigued with the range finding binos so I might have to really save up.

I did this dance about two years ago and settled on the Tract Tekoa 10x42. I'd seen them at some outdoor shows and was interested in performance beyond the price from a lesser known manufacturer. Made in Japan, ED prime glass, superb craftsmanship, and excellent ergonomics and optics.

I recommend them highly.

Matt,

Gr8tfuldoug has some 10x42 Leica rangefinders in the classifieds section

for $999.00. I believe they are the Geovid's, pretty good price for that

binocular. I have Leica, Swaro, Zeiss,... & like Swaro the best. Don't have any

rangefinder bino's (yet!).

Good luck with your search.

I love my old Zeiss rubber armored compacts. I bet you could find a good pair used, but new they are a bit over your stated price range.

Depending on how old you are, Matt, a 10x42 would be a waste as older eye pupils just don't open enough to benefit from that 4.2 opening. I've just moved from Leica 10x42 to Leica 10x32 for that very reality.

Regards, Tim

Matt,

Ray, as often, is so right on that one!

I bought the Leica Geo/range finders for the ergonomics. After using them for a while I realized they were a bit better than my Swarovski 10x42's.

As far as the range finder part is concerned, I still prefer my Swarovski range finder with the orange circle to anything else I've seen.
