Just picked up my newly rebarrelled 30-06 Ackley Imp from my gunsmith on Monday.

He suggested I removed the 24 yr old 2-pc Conetrol bases and rings and instead, replace them with the Burris Signature rings and bases.

Rifle is a Rem 700 long action. Scope is a Nikon 4.5-14 w/ mil dot reticle.

I've never had any problems with the Conetrols.

Thanks for any opinions.

Is the bluing worn? Are they beat up? Why replace one of the highest quality rings made with something that has plastic in the place of precision machined steel?

The plastic ring inserts are an abomination, in my opinion. They WILL deteriorate with time, temperature, and oxidation. Therefore, their grip on the scope will change over time. Other than being a quick fix for misaligned bases, the plastic inserts are a gimmick that is unneeded for proper scope mounting.

Stonecreek may have a point, if it is not broke, don't fix it.
I have a set of the Burris rings & inserts on a 338-06 Rem 700 I had built. They worked fine, just like they were supposed to. I had to change the inserts around a little but they did work as advertised.
I cannot speak to the durability of them yet, only time will tell.
