Leaning to a zeiss conquest. What other options are out there in the $500 range.
Going on interarms mark x 7x57 or 30-06.
Whitetail and bear primary targets and occasional piggy.

I have a couple of Leupold fixed 6x scopes and one 12x, love them, no problems at all. Also have an old Redfield 4x Bearcub that has been a really good scope. My only complaint with the Zeiss scopes is that the eye relief seems to be very critical, not much margin for eye placement.

I bought a Leupold FXIII 6x42 with some Custom Shop modifications some few years ago and use it on a tactical rifle and have used it hard and it is one tough scope with very good light transmission and overall clarity. Leupold folks I have spoken with consider this model one of their better efforts and have very few complaints.

The Zeiss Conquest 3-9 is a landmmark scope. Thats what to get.

Turn its magnification to whatever you like best and leave it there.

Good hunting.

Both Kahles and Zeiss offer 1" tube models - can't go wrong with anyone of them.
The Zeiss Classic Diatal has better coatings than the cheaper Conquest.
Swarovski does not even list a fixed magnification scope anymore.

The Romanian scope company IOR is offering a high quality 4x32 mm scope as well:
