The Leica CRF 1200 is an outstanding rangefinder. Very likely the best. That is the good news. The bad news is that I dropped mine, it fell about three feet and hit a wooden floor and screwed up the calibration. Leica refused to replace or repair it under warranty, or even repair it at my expense.

Just understand that if you get one, you have a superb rangefinder, but if it needs any service, Leica doesn't honor the warranty on their rangefinders.

It is unfortunate that Leica continues to give customers the stiff upper lip on repair for their products. IMO they currently have the worst warranty of any optics manufacturer in the business. I firmly believe they produce a quality product and own several items that Leica produces. Having said that, I personally feel that Swarovski is the way to go. They stand behind their optics and offer a no hassle warranty as does Zeiss, Leupold, S&B….and so on.

I strongly suggest that anyone purchasing Leica items go through one of several businesses who post on this forum. In the event that you need repair these guys will make it happen and have a track record for cutting through all the BS one will get trying to deal directly with the manufacturer.

do you realy need the 1200 yards of range - if not, there is the new Leica CRF 800 out for a better price...

check here and keep in mind that in those prices are 19%vat included which anybody outside germany has not to pay:

http://www.titanium-gunworks.c...800-rangemaster.html

but if you realy want the best meassuring optics, you should stick with the swarovski rangefinder - he meassures under more extreme conditions better then the leica - and i have myself meassured up to 1700m with that one (nearly 2000yards)

A couple of things-- Ranging capability is a lot like horsepower in a vehicle. I have never been sorry that I had too much, but I have wished for more on a number of occasions.

A friend of mine has the Swaro, and we have run his side by side with my Leica CRF 1200. The Leica acquires the target significantly faster than the Swaro in our two samples. The red led in the Leica is a lot easier to see in bright sunlight than the orange led of the Swaro, at least for me. We ran them to a bit over 800 yards hunting bison, and both would acquire a single animal at that distance, but the Leica consistently gave the reading quicker. The Leica is also smaller than the Swaro.

I agree with Sharpsguy. I have the Leica CRF 1200 and my friend the Swarovski. We did a test also with similar results. Acquisition time was faster on my Leica. I had an earlier version of the Leica (about 5 years old) and hated it. Not the new CRF 1200, it is great. Fortunately, up to now I haven't had an issue with needing warranty work. From what I read, hope I never do.

If you have a friend stateside that can buy one on sale for you and mail it to you, might be your least expensive route to go.

Good luck.

I own the Leica, but now that I have heard these comments about their warranty and service, I won't buy another one if their service does not change. The Swaro definitely has more horse power especially past 1000 yards, but the Leica is fast. Next time I will buy the Swaro or Zeiss. I won't knowingly support a company that does not take care of their customers.

I have only used Leicas, including the CRF 1200, which is what I now use.

I do like them, but it can be very difficult to get a reading under some light conditions and for some targets.

That may be true of all rangefinders for all I know - as I have only used Leicas - but I would be interested to try the Swarovski to see if there is a difference.

Don't know about Leica's policy on fixing a broken range finder, but they are fixing a broken 20-60x spotting scope ocular for me right now at no cost under their "good will" warranty.

I just bought a 1200 Leica from Scopecity.com as they are set up for international sales. Only down side is that the shiping charges are not included in sale and are calculated as "actual cost" and require a seperate payement. Cost for shiping was $72 and on arrival postage cost shown was $42 so felt a bit ripped off when bought scopess from the States and shipping was between $35 and $50.
Stoked with the Leica though.

The "Unit" I like the best is the Leica binos with the rangefinder built in.
I prefer 8x binos.

It is very handy to have the rangefinder built in to the bino. VERY HANDY.

Not only for ease of use, but you only have to carry one "thing".

If you do not need 1200, we are still offering the Leica CRF-900 @ $429.99 and we ship internationally thru USPS Priority. For the price there's no better unit.

Have a great day,
