Has anyone actually weighed the new Zeiss 1.8 - 5.5 x 38? The reason I ask is the Zeiss USA webpage says they weigh more than the 3 - 9 x 40 and about the same as the 1.5 - 6 x 42 Zeiss scopes. Back in the Summer (this year) a poster pointed out that 390 (or 410?) grams, the Euro weight stated did not equate to 18oz. It is closer to 14.5oz. Another poster, a dealer?, then posted, having weighed one. He posted it weighed around 16oz. This is still a lot for a scope, which should, weigh no more than the 3-9x40, assuming both scopes actually share the same body tube.

Thank you. I think you were the 'dealer' who answered people's earlier questions on the new Zeiss scopes. I was a little surprised by the weight / dimensions given for the new 1.8-5.5x38 scope. Refering to Zeiss brochures, although some are old, I found the following: Zeiss 3-9X40 MC Objective lens bell diameter = ? Eye piece lens bell diameter = 41mm OAL = 12.2 ins Weight = 13.75 oz Zeiss 3-9x36 MC Objective lense bell (front lens) diameter 44mm (1.732 ins) Occular lense bell (eye piece) diameter 42.5mm (1.673 ins) Overall length 284mm (11.18 ins) Weight 430 grams (454.55 grams = 16 oz, 430 = 15.14 oz) Zeiss 6x42 MC Occular lens bell = 1.57 ins (40mm) objective lens bell = 1.9 ins (48.3mm) OAL = 12.8 ins (325mm) Weight = 14.1 oz (400.57 grams) Diavari 1.5-6x42 Objective lens bell diameter = 48mm (1.89 ins) Eye piece lens bell diameter= 40mm (1.575 ins) OAL= 312 mm (12.28 ins) Weight = 440 grams (15.49 oz) Now compare these with the new Zeiss 1.8-5.5x38 scope: Objective lens bell diameter = 44mm Eye piece lens bell diameter = 41mm OAL = 13.5 inches (343mm) Weight, according to Zeiss USA web page = 18 oz From this, I concluded scopes generally have an objective lens bell diameter 6mm bigger than the front lens diameter and that the weight given was out of proportion to the other stated measurements, even taking account of it's length. The Diatal ZM/Z 8x56 MC weighs 18.3 oz and is 14.5 ins OAL. The 15.8 oz (448.9 grams), while still on the heavy side compared to Leupold, a missed opportunity perhaps?, is more realistic. In the scope's favour is it's length. Many scopes are too short to mount easily / properly (without extension rings / bases). This should be more straight forward on the big CZ actions etc.
