I've been approached by a friend that is having difficulty zeroing his scope. LYNX 3-9x40. He can zero spot on at 100m but when he tries to zero at 200m it groups all over the place. Rifle is a SAKO .270 Win. If anybody can shed some light it would be much appreciated? Many thanks

Any chance it's a bullet/load that's not stabilized or wind bucking at longer distances?

It is a factory PMP 150gr Proamm (local) that groups under an inch @ 100m.

I own a lot of Sako rifles, and as far as the rifle itself, the only thing I can think of is check the action screws, if they are even a little bit off, accuracy can go to pot, but usually isn't that good at 100 and rubbish at 200....

Try a scope on the rig that is KNOWN to be accurate at longer distances. Check the bases and rings completely. Try a different ammo and see if it does the same thing--try something with Nosler ballistic tips, just since they are so prone to be accurate. Have you shot the rifle with the same results??

I had a good friend with a Sako 75 in 25-06, and it was terribly inaccurate--WITH HIM SHOOTING IT--he could shot maybe an inch or so at 100, and like 5" at 200. I sat down with it on the same session as him one day, and I could shoot it into 1/2" at 100 for 5 shots (easily) and about an 1" or just over at 200--he decided to keep it after that session, and 'after he got used to it some more' it shot a lot better somehow Roll Eyes

Keep us posted and we'll help as more information is available.

If he can move the POI up, say 5 cms, at 100 yards and it still groups, it's almost certainly not the scope, although there could be some weird parallax issue at play if he's moving his head around.

Try shooting it at 100 yds, and "box test" the scope at 100 yds. Maybe the scope's internal adjustments are broken.

Are you changing the magnification when you are trying to zero it for 200m?

I would set it at 9 zero 100, and then check 200.

Had a scope that would do this, change zero with different power.
