I would appreciate your comments on the quality and price along your experience with the Burris Black Diamond 30mm 8-32x50 scope. I am considering the purchase of this scope for use on a varmint rifle. Thank you. Buliwyf

Hello Buliwyf. I have had this scope in the bmd model for about 2 years. The scope has been perfect so far, with no complaints mechanically or with the glass(which i feel is pretty good). Mine is on a heavy 223 which makes for a few problems for me. One is that the bmd reticle is calibrated for a 22-250, and for whatever reason only at 14x?? The other is that it is not blessed with very much in the way of internal adjustments, this also makes shooting way out there a bit of a problem without a canted base. Combine that with 1/8" clicks and this also makes for a bunch of counting, which if I had to do again would definately be 1/4" clicks. Also, the entire rear ocular housing rotates which makes it a pain to use the flip up stle covers. It may sound as if I'm complaining about the scope, but I am not, it was my first "real" scope and in the last 2 years I have read and learned a great deal about almost every brand of scope going. I would also add to this that I would likely not get this magnification range again for two reasons, one is mirage on the top end, the other is poor field of view on the low end. If I were to do it again, and hopefully soon I will, my scope choices would be either the 3.5x15 or 5.5x22 nightforce, or possibly the 3x18 IOR. I realize that these are above the price of the burris somewhat, but I now beleive I would have been money in to do it rite the first time. If you are really interested in the burris, I would reccomend the 6x24 or the 4x16, just my opinion but I would buy the very best glass you can afford, good luck, Cdog.

Thank you for your comments Cdog. Very helpful. I have never owned a varible scope with this high of a magnification range before and wondered about the mirage factor. Good comment about buying the afforable best glass. I'm going to look into the Nightforce before making a final decision. Thanks again. B

the mirage factor is one of the reasons to buy a variable. You can start in the cool of the morning at high power and dial down as the heat increases. I used to use some burris stuff until i needed to have one fixed, now I don't use anything from them
