I am looking to replace my Zeiss 10x25's to something better and now I see I have a choice in Leica's..There is at least a $200 difference and the "cheap" ones are not cheap! The Trinovids vrs the Ultravids..Anyone know the difference and is the price jump worth it?! Thanks!

I have an 8x42 Trinovid and am deliriously happy with it. I think the Ultravid is a couple of ounces lighter, but I had no trouble humping the Trinovid all over three blocks in the Selous last year and RSA the year before, and I'm 64. My eyes aren't what they used to be, of course, but the Trinovid performs very well.

According to the Leica catalog, the Ultravid 10X25BR weighs 265 grams, the 8X20BR weighs 240 grams. The Trinovid 10X25 BCA weighs 255 grams and the 8 power 235 grams. I don't think the weight difference amounts to enough to use as a criteria for purchase of the one or the other.

Trinovids have an aluminum body, the Ultravids do as well, at least in the compact line. If you step up to the 8 X 32 and larger objective lens Leicas then the Ultravids have magnesium bodies.

So what is the real difference in the ultra-compacts? The Ultravids are waterproof to 5 meters, the Trinovids are not. The Ultravids have the HLS (High Lux System) which supposedly makes them brighter with better definition, because of the better light transmission. When I look through the Ultravids I see a clear picture in low light. Not too scientific, but that would make the difference to me in terms of shelling out the bucks.

Last October I bought a pair of Zeiss 8x20 Victory binox from Doug at Camera Land. They weigh about 8 or 9 oz; just perfect for carrying in my pack. The glass is as good as it gets for lightweight binox. I called Doug and asked his advice as to which of the light weights were the best, comapring Swaro, Lieca, Nikon and Zeiss. I had looked at the four on each makers web sites before calling Doug, so I knew the specs. I needed his advice as he has looked through each. He suggested Zeiss Victory's, so that what I bought. The Victory glass provides a great image, and they are easy to use. The Victories are made in 10x too, but for hunting in Michigan's swamps, 8x is best.
IIRC, they were about $400.

I'm with Wink,on this.

I have used both and my Ultravids are bloody better, due to the increased light transmission.

Buy them.........life is too short Wink

I also have Ultravids and a major attraction for me was the waterproof factor.

I have noticed that they need to be sharply focussed and that almost all the focus regardless of distance is within about half a turn of the focussing wheel.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Kiwi,

Yes, I have.

I bought the 8 X 20 ultravids, after looking thru both at Cabela's. To my 65 yr.s old eyes, there were a difference. Use mine for deer hunting, etc., as they are so compact , slip in my shirt pocket. That's probably why I carry mine with me most of the time.

I own 4 other pr. of full size bino's, Pentax, Stieners, Bushnells, all in the $250 to $450 range. No comparsion , the ultravids, to my eyes, are the best.
