I had a .222/20 guage combo--Savage 24V. I put a Leupold 1x-4x on it. With the .222 sighted in, he shotgun was low. I gave the rig to one of my sons in law.

hi carpetman
mine is austrian made and has the shotgun barrel on the top and rifle barrel under and i like it as it is . i woulden't have the same problem as you had with your savage combo. i don't know if it is better to buy a shotgun scope or rifle scope . i shoot a lot of slugs in it.

I consider Nikon Prostaff to be as good or better than a Leupold VXIII. Yes, I typed that correctly. Nikon simply has no peers at its price points.

Nikon ProStaff is by far the best scope out there in its price range.

Very tough scopes and hard to beat in their price range. I've beaten the heck out of two of the prostaff 2-7x32s on a slug gun and turkey gun w/o an issue.

I thought twice about jumping in here, but couldn't resist based on LWD's statement. The majority of my friends who own rifles go through a box of ammo about every 5 years. My other friends with rifles and myself shoot 300 - 2000 rounds in a year (not from the same weapon). Having said that, the shooters who rarely shoot own low end equipment and seem some what happy with it. The others of us have found that the cheaper stuff does not perform under our type of use. We found out the hard way and won't buy low end equipment. You get what you pay for. Low end equipment often does not hold up to high recoil guns and are definitely not repeatable.

LWD - Nikon Pro Staff better than Leupold VXIII? No way. I am not a promoter of Leupold equipment, but I think they have the best warranty in the business. I wouldn't own their range finders. However, I do own a Leupold VXI scope. I'll admit it is not a scope I would buy again based on my experience with repeatability. The only Nikon equipment I would own is a Nikon camera. Their range finders are in the class with Leupold, nothing I would own.

If he has a nice VXIII I'll trade him my brand new Prostaff for it.

of all the optics ive broke and sent in, nikon leopold, burris , fuginon, nikon is the only one i got back same box unopened. optics were good on nikon, better than vx 11 not as much eye relief as leopold but few brands do. up here in alaska this time of yr the sun is always on the horizon which creates lots of reflections and the woods are always dark even if the sun is shining and not overcast, i cant really complain about nikon coatings or clarity, but i preferr vx111

I don't know about the Pro Staff. I do know the Monarch is better than the VXIII, I had them both and sold the Leupold to a friend.

+1 for the Leupold VX I 1-4 or 2-7. Best bang for the buck!

Well, I figured I might stir a bit with that one! I can't trade the my VXIII for a Prostaff cuz I've gotten rid of all my Leupolds for more money than I paid for the Nikons! Cool

Leupold definitely has some pluses with the warranty, build quality, and exceptional eyebox being a few of them. On the other hand, any maybe it's my eyes, but I find the Nikon Prostaff to be much brighter than any Leupold I've looked through. I've also never had a lick of trouble with any of my Nikons and you will have to look hard to find many who have. Many of the naysayers have never tried Nikon.

I have 2 100 dollar Bushnell scopes, and a Simmons I picked up used for 30 bucks. We judge clarity by trying focus on the ring of bolts around an access cover on the water tower down the road. The Bushnells are as good as, and the Simmons close to the Nikon. I am told that the glass in the Nikon is the same as in some of their more expensive models. We checked them out near sundown with similar results. My late BIL brought up his Leupold and I and both my adult sons found it better, particularly in low light.
