I like the light weight of the Steiner 12x30 but wonder about optical clarity and if the 12 power is too much magnification. Have you used this bino and if so, what is your opinion? Thanks.

I have a pair of Steiner 12x40s and they are great unless I was doing extended periods of glassing then I would get a lot of eye strain. I have a pair of 8x30s that I use more and can glass all day. Hope that helps.

Thanks rigs. I have found Steiner to be a good solid product. I haven't seen the 12x30. I am drawn to the light weight of the 12x30.

I don't own a pair (I've got a pair of 8X42 Leica Ultravids) but I have looked through the Steiner Peregrine binoculars and found them very good indeed. Other than the Peregrine line, I haven't found Steiners to be top contenders. As for 12X binoculars, I just have a hard time using them since the slightest amount of movement causes too unstable an image for me. A 10X Steiner Peregrine, if you can get a good price, is a nice option to the more expensive Swaros and Leicas. I also wear eyeglasses and don't like the eyecups on the Steiners for that reason. I was wondering about the eyecup design. The Steiners I have handled gave me the perception they were an excellent value. A buddy has a pair about 25 years old. They are battered but optically clear. The 12x30's caught my attention due to the light weight, 13 oz IIRC. Does Steiner make binos for military use?

I don't know which, if any, military organizations have bought Steiner binoculars for general issue. I do know that they make milspec binoculars. Their Steiner Commander series is frequently used by boat owners, especially the version with the compass incorporated. http://www.opticsplanet.net/st...b-st-military-r.html _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Also look through the Nikon Monarch ATB 8X42, around $250. It may be the best deal in binoculars now on the market. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.
