I'm trying to select a night vision scope and I know very little about them. My purpose is not for hunting, but rather general use. We live out in the country, and it get quite dark at nights and sometimes I want to be able to see whats out there, sepcial any anumals eating our crops.

I noticed that the scopes (binoculars I guess) are divided into three catagories: 1st generation, 2nd gen, and 3rd gen.

I'm assuming that there must be pro's and con's to each version, otherwise everyone would by the 3rd generation because that would be "the best".

Are there any good online guides for understanding the difference among the different types and a buyers guide? Do you gentlemen have any suggestions for a good general purpose night vision scope?

I'd like to spend around $300, but I casn go as high at $500 if need be.
