Gander Mtn. had Nikon 1.5x4 Monarch shotgun scopes on a reduced price deal some three or four years ago and bought a couple and have since used them on everything from AR15's to big bores, 375HH and 458Lott. They work fine and have had no problems whatsoever.

If anything, shotgun scopes are probably more "recoilproof" than most. The only difference really is they are of a thicker crosshair design and as you stated are focused to be paralax free at 75 yards, vs. 100 or 150 yds. for rifle scopes.
If you pick the right rifle cartridge, you might be able to get the BDC marks to hit very close to where the scope was calibrated for slugs.

Got a 1-4x heavu duplex leupie shotgun scope, that has been on my Marlin 1895 .45-70 GG for years. I've used it both hear and in Africa. Recently transfered it to my Ruger no. 1, 375 H&H, and it's going back to Africa this summer. I like what one of the above posters said, they will take a lot of recoil. No issues.
