I have always mounted my own scopes, but recently I purchased a new scope and took the old one off. My 1" rings just barely tighten down on the tube. I think I need a shim, do you think using piece of aluminium can as a shim will work?

Well they probably make some commercial ones but I always found an aluminum can and a pair of snips work well too. You can cut it to whatever shape you want and it won't rust or soak up water or oil and expand.

Might mar the scope finish though
